Radar Detectors

Relax this isn't a replay of the "What's best" thread!!

I got clipped by a smoky yesterday, not really misbehaving but enough to cost $150.

So I've decided to get a detector but they're illegal here and so hiding it is the the question.

I've seen the kind that go in your pocket but they run on batteries and would prefer something mounted to the bike but I'm not 100% on that though.

Has anybody had any experience finding a spot to hide one of these so one doesn't get a ticket for speeding and one for having a detector?

How about the Bel 966R which is supposed to be for motorcycles??

What's the experience with warning signals, visible or audible??

TIA

Check out this thread.

Workman mounted his radar detector where the small third headlight is. I doubt any cop would see it there.

I was looking at the BEL 975R which seperates the antenae from the control unit. The antenae can be mounted in the wheel well in front of the rad or on the bottom of the snorkle.

The control unit is small but you need to see it to detect a signal. The Passport 8500 comes with a remote signal but its ugly and the unit and antena are connected so its difficult to hide.

I want something that came with a warning light perhaps looking like a shift light which I could mount on the trailing edge of the windscreen, closer to my line of sight and the controller in the back out of sight. The BEL 966R comes with a separate signal light which can be mounted anyhwere except it doesn't appear to be available in Norht America and cost about twice as much.

Could the audio signal be used to drive a series of LEDs??

I believe that DaveInDaytona has a method for rigging a Valentine inside the front faining, behind the parking light. Great detector and minimal stuff outside for 'da man to spot. Only problem is that it would eliminate alerts from signals behind you.

I've been around and around this issue, and believe the best solution would be a battery powered radar detector designed to fit inside the helmet using an external antena; somebody could make some good money on this idea.

Here's the thread on the LED http://www.bikeland.org/board/viewthread.php?FID=1&TID=8028

I believe RedElk had a thread on how he mounted his V-! in the 3rd light thingy too.

I use the battery powered Bel in my coat pocket....works great except for too many false alarms on motion detectors, etc....

The laser detector part of it is disabled in my pocket, as well as the rearview warning sadly....I'm more concerned w/an oncoming CHP anywayz...

Yup - sherm has his V1 in the third light compartment in his fairing. There's a company that makes an led warning light (HARD something or another) that interfaces directly with the V1. So you could take the V1, mount it stealth-like, get the 'remote' thing with the V1, the HARD interface, and be completely undetectable.

Unless around your area they have radar detector detectors.

Yup Glenn is right. I HAD the setup under the city light on my 2000, but with the new configuration it won't fit that way on a 2002. So, you can put in a pretty slick stealth setup if you have a 2001 or earlier and I probably have pictures of that setup somewhere if you want to see it.

Here are some radar resources I've seen that may help.

If you wanted to spend A LOT of money, you could go with the Escort SR-7 setup...Which has seperate rear and front remote antennas. OR go even more big-dog with the add-on ZR-# laser shifter...
