Oil Light on and Motor Knock

I have a 02 12r laid it down on the rightside pick it back up started it back up and the oil light was on and had a knock in the motor any suggestions. When I said laid it down I mean just that, couldn't hold it when it started to fall so let it down lightly.

The answer is in your answer:

How long was it down?

5 seconds? 30?

It makes a big difference. The 12 tip over switch frequently doesn't fire (or mis-fire as it were :-)).

If its knocking, odds are the answer is > 15 seconds and cavitation was going strong.

Till you determine this, the worst thing you can do is fire the bike up again. Once a bearing starts to go....

It only ran about 5-10 sec. I talk to my dealer today was told to loosen the oil filter and start the bike and let it run until oil come out then tighten. The oil light should go out. He said the oil pump just lost its prime. This should solve my problem. It rain today so I didn't get chance to try it yet. I will keep you all posted.

Should have but frequently don't.

I know of three zx-12s that have gone down and the tip-over switch didn't switch....

One ran on its side for at least 45 seconds (best guess from an observer) and required a new crank, bearings, etc.... Sad, but true...

we're assuming the knock is a rod knock, but is it really??

just thought I'd ask....

Taking the oil pan off is really no big deal. When the plastic is off, it's only a 10 minute job.

Hell, draining the oil takes longer than taking the pan off.

With the pan off, you could look for brass filings in there. They'd be easy to spot if it was a bearing problem.

I'll bet a dollar to a donut that the knock has gone away. We just talked about this problem at the shop the other day. A guy came in after changing oil on his 02 ZX12R. Started and ran his numerous times before the light and knock went away. Got on the thing, and rode to Colorado with no problems. The old man at the shop (35yrs with KHI) suggested doing as you where told to do. Somewhat a common problem on older EX 500 models. Hope their advice solves your problem. They were'nt just blowing smoke up your .........

Okay here we go. Loosen the oil filter, cranked the old 12 and a little oil came out the filter but the light didn't go out and the motor still knocks.
Tried it a second time and damn oil come out like a women on the ragg and the light went out, even the motor played a different song. So the moral of this story is if the motor knocks it ain't aways the bearings.

That's very good to hear!! The way Bob (old Man) explained it, the system becomes air locked. Air locked/pump lost it's prime, either way. I'm sure you're smiling.

I'm glad i was wrong. This is not the best time of the year to have your bike at the dealer for a month or two. Riding season would be over.

All I did was change the oil in a ZX12 one time (left it with no oil in motor overnight) and the oil light didn't want to go out when started the next day with the new oil/filter...
Loosened the filter...started motor...ran till oil came out (maybe 3-sec.) tightened filter...ALL IS FINE...

I've heard of this happening several times over the years the 12s have been out...many people have had this happen...
I believe it was "INTRA"??? that had his bike fall over in his garrage NOT EVEN RUNNING and ended up killing the motor (bearings) when he RODE THE BIKE trying to get the light to go off?!?!?!
Just loosen the filter...run till oiling (if within seconds)...re-tighten filter...

When I build motors...I will NOT...start the motor for the first time until I have primed the entire oiling system...starting with not tightening the filter until oil comes out of the cooler

Yes it is common that after every oilchange it can take too much time to oil light to go off so nowadays I always start the bike with oilfilter little loose and kill it and close the filter after oil starts coming. But on the sidenote to the tip-over switch. Its cind of weird that according to maintenance book the US-model has much greater angle to switch the engine of than others? Why - maybe because of Your (expensive)law system - but maybe the European limit, which is like 10degrees less, works better in reality? And one question to BA - You said it takes only like ten minutes to take the oilpan off. According to the manual You need to remove the exhaust - is this nessecary? Because I'm looking to change my shift dogs - I have to take the oil pan off - but do I need to take also the exhaust off and buy new seals?

Here is a FOOL-PROOF sugestion when changing oil in your 12's.

UNPLUG the Injectors before turning over the engine. The plug is right under the rail, between #1 and #2 throttlebodies. Dick Simple!

Now you can "Burp" the filter, then turn over the engine untill the oil lite goes out. Plug in injectors and FIRE!
