Shock questions...

OK went to the track today...was having a great time and doing ok....my bike kept jumping up in the rough pavement and kicking me in the ass.....had one of the mechanics look at the bike....ofund out the shock is shot! No rebound dampening at all.
1. does anyone know if the rear shock on a 01 ZX6R is rebuildable?
2. Does anyone know if this part is warrantied by Kawasaki?

I bought the extended warranty for the bike so the bike is covered, just not sure if that part is covered?

thanks fellas...Jim

if it aint leakin......unlikely its shot

if it aint leaking
also unlikely KHI will fix
your dilema at the track is probably
not justifiable.........of course you can always ask

yes it s is rebuildable
at a cost of approx 1/2 the amount of a new ohlins or fox(a relatively good choice)
of course if i really thought it was
i call race tech..... hyperpro & see what they have top say

good luck

I believe they are rebuildable.

I don't think they will warranty it. They'll say that it got damaged on the track, and that the warranty does not cover track use

You might want to try cheking/refilling the nitrogen psi, first. It shouldn't cost more then $25. Just make sure they have a needle since the 12R does not use a schrader valve.

Who knows? If it leaks or won't hold a charge, you might be able to score a replacement under warranty. If it does hold a charge, you might want to put 200 psi (Race Tech recommended) instead of the OEM spec'ed 143 psi and see if it helps. Don't be surprised to see your current psi well below the OEM specs before refilling.

For about $25, I figure it's the cheapest place to start.

no place to recharge...it

Don't take that for an answer! Motocross riders are always messing with the nitrogen pressure in their rear shock. There's gotta be some place around you that does this for them. Probably half the dealers and more then half of the independent shops will have a nitrogen tank for this purpose.

The majority of them are using a Motion Pro Nitrogen Shock Gauge & Filler (part # 08-0072 - about $165 retail) or something similar. The reason is that since the nitrogen bladders are so small and the pressure is so high, the filling attachment has to be removable from the shock bladder without loosing any of the pressure. Just a brief "pssst" could result in a loss of 50 psi or more.

The Motion Pro gauge comes with the Schrader valve attachment and extension (for Showa shocks). The Schrader valve is by far and away the most common way to refill shocks and is used by all the major OEM (Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc.) and aftermarket (Penske, Ohlins, Fox, etc.) manufacturers. Even the shocks on the Kawasaki 6R, 6RR, 7R, 9R, KX, KDX and most of the other KHI products that use a shock with a remote nitrogen reservoir, use a Schrader valve.

The problem is that the 12R does not. I don't know what those bonehead engineers were thinking when the decided to use a self sealing rubber valve instead, but about the only other shocks that use such a valve are older models of Yamaha, Fox and some Ohlins shocks. This is why many of the places that do refill the nitrogen in shocks can not do the 12R's shock. Ah-ha! There is a solution though. Motion Pro also sells a Nitrogen Needle Kit (part # 08-0075 - about $30 retail). All you gotta do is convince the dealer or the independent shop that they are not "truly a full service facility" without the worthwhile tool. Worked for me.

Worse case scenario would be that you by the needle yourself and offer to "trade" it to the dealer or shop in exchange for refilling you shock. Though I said that a refill normally runs about $25, I have heard of it costing as much as $50. So "trading off" your $30 needle for a $50 recharge oughta work out pretty good. If you can't find any dealer or shop that can recharge it, you might want to try some of the industrial gas suppliers and see if they will do it if you bring your on needle.

On the other hand, you could just send it off to some place like Race Tech (who will also replace the bladder with one that has a Schrader valve, if requested) and have them rebuild/revalve it. Just "guess-timating" you costs, it would depend on what parts you have them replace. The shop labor is $100. Then you can add the following options (depending on what needs replacement or not):

Shock Gold Valve Kit SMGV S4001 - $159.99
Shock Oil - $24.99
Oil and Dust Seal Set - $15.99
Shaft Bushing - $9.99
Seal Head Assembly - $38.99
46x64 Reservoir Bladder - CALL

So, It could run around $350 after shipping and such are added in. It might be less, but it just depends on what you have them do. Now, if that "hazardous duty" pay is just burning a hole in your pocket, you could always start shopping for a Penske 8981 ($750), 8987 ($1100 - has high AND low speed compression adjustments) or a Ohlins 46PRCLS ($950).

ok fellas I dont think I was clear...its nto the shcok on my 12, its the one on my 01 ZX6R that is giving me fits. The shock had NO rebound dampening....NONE... with the adjuster turned all the way, there is nothing...is this still a nitrogen problem? I will make some more calls tomorrow and ask around if I can find somehting...I am a very long way from any major shops. Might need to go see Kevin with this bike then...dam all that way for a dam shock...Kevin is there anything you all can do on it?

You were perfectly clear...

1. does anyone know if the rear shock on a 01 ZX6R is rebuildable?

Now if I would bother to actually READ the post... well... nevermind (a lot harder to slam one's self)

ANYWAY... At least you have been spared the "needle". So, you have turned the rebound all the way in both directions and there is absolutly NO DIFFERENCE in how the bike handles on the SAME stretch of road, right?

Assuming that the spring is not broken in several places, one would figure that it's one of the following:

1. The rebound adjusting screw on the bottom of the shock is either stripped or not actually adjusting anything when turned (highly unlikely)

2. Some kind of contamination of the shock oil (kinda possible)

3. The valving or ports in the shock are not operating properly or clogged (most likely)

THAT IS IF, softening BOTH the compression, as well as the rebound setting also make little to no difference and the ride is still very rough.

I'm just speculating here, because I don't know about this stuff (as if ignorance has ever stopped me before!) but I believe the nitrogen deals with the compression aspect of the shock. I'd guess if the nitrogen pressure was too low, the shock would have less resistence while compressing and possibly bottom out fairly quick. This does not seem to fit your description of what's happening.

The oil inside the shock absorber is used to create rebound damping when forced through orifices or valving. The oil is also used for lubrication and should be incompressible.

If after trying the softer settings doesn't help, then I'd guess it's the valving that has failed for some strange reason. Again, I am truly ignorant on such matters, but that's what it looks like. Still, it's best to consult with the folks that REALLY DO KNOW what they are talking about (more the one or two "experts, if possible), before you start forking (pun intended) over the big bucks.

made some calls today..and talke to a few guys....I am going to send the shock off to Competition Works to have it rebuilt. They are tellin me its going to run about $200 to have it dont...sounded pretty reasonable to me. If it turns out well I may have them do the forks as well.....if that happens, Kelly is gonna be in the market for a new street bike....anyone got a used FZ1 for sale.......lmao
