How bizarre!
As many of you know I picked up a DR-Z400 2 weeks or so ago.. since then I havent riden the 12 once... I've been working pretty steadily on the DR-Z... got the carb set up, new knobbies installed.... screwed with the suspension a bit and went down 1/front up three in the back...
riding the bike is a hoot... it weighs next to nothing... it'll do 80mph in a tailwind so I wont be getting any tickets (at least not fer speeding hehehehehe)...
so tonight it's a damn nice night out and I had an hour to kill so I took the 12 out on the twisties by my house....
well fuck me do I have to learn to ride again or what!?! 2 weeks on the DR-Z and my riding on the 12 is shot to hell! I can barely corner the thing... it's SOOO heavy!!! .... Man does it have a lot of power! Just bizarre to ride it now! Kinda like drinking orange juice right after brushing yer teeth.... both are great to do .. just not back to back...
anyhow... thought I'd share this as I gave myself a healthy chuckle tonite...
also noticed that I did the 1st part of my ride entirely in 1st gear! too funny!

lol@ Fish.....I get the same way jumping from the 6r to the 12....its a huge change, but no where near the change of going from the DR-Z.....been thinking about a KLR400.....but got to wait until spring before I buy anything...

You guys have it backwards. You need to do what I've been doing. Ride the Harley (or whatever other heavy slug you have in your stable) for awhile on Saturday, then jump on the 12 for Sunday morning knee draggin. You'll be soooo fast it's not even funny.
There are exceptions though. When I get done mx-ing my YZ450F and jump on the 12, I also feel ton's faster. Go figure........
If you're really serious about "Dual Sport". Get a used YZ400/426 and get a Dual Sport kit for it. It's way,way lighter and way faster than the DRZ/KLR. Plus you can always pull the stuff off and have a bitchin mx bike! In my area they're running in the low $3k area for good ones. Cost you about $500 or so for the DS Kit, Tires, Registration. I know a guy who just converted a 426 into one and he could probably take about 75% of the Sportbike guys in the tighter twisties. The best part is that he'll run off the road sometimes on purpose and get it completely sideways, burm-shot off something, or jump off something, before coming back onto the pavement. You've got to see it to believe it. I about pee my shorts because I'm laughing so hard watching him. Yea, yea, it's not the safest thing, but jeezes krike it's funny. If he ever decides to get a sportbike, I'm going to make sure he does track days because he'd be scary fast.

would love to have a YZ426 set up with a DS kit, and with Motard tires on it....woooo hooo that would be fun.............

it's SOOO heavy!!! You got that right!! As an owner of numerious bikes, rangeing from a KLR 650 (work), 640 KTM SuperMoto(243lbs), ZRX1100(easy to ride), and a 97 RGV250 sp (284lbs), the 12 feels like a tank compared to any of them. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've never riden another motorcycle that can accelerate like it. She could stand to loose some weight though.

Heavy? Mine's a proverbial lightweight at 530 lbs wet, compared to my Harley that's close to 700 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makes me smile!  It is all relitive, not wieght related! One of the owners at the bike shop rides an EX500 for his sport bike. I've asked him why he doesn't move up to something faster, something more cutting edge. He points to his 61 Matchless single, ride that ol girl for an hour or so that 500 will feel like a rocket ship!!

One of the biggest changes to how a 12 feels when moving is the wheels. After you do the exhaust, it's time to really get serious. When I put the Marchesinis on my 12, Zhooligan took both bikes (his stock wheels and shock at the time, mine Marchesinis and Ohlins shock) and took them down by the water on some twisty lil backroads that dove up and down the waterfront. BIG difference! We got back to MVR's and he ordered the wheels and shock that day.  Not too much longer after that, I sent the forks off to get resprung/revalved, and he did the same.

I saw a set of wheels, I dont know who made them, they were in a South Africa bike magazine. They were Carbon Fiber and look gooooooood. Not sure I want to spend that kind of money though. I think I need to have Kelly read SWFT's post....maybe it will convince her to let me to the shock and forks....heheheheh

Fish - Don't know exactly which model DRZ you have, but most slightly modified YZ400/426 will come in around 250 lbs or so wet. The lightest
DRZ is probably 280 plus easy (wet). The "E" has got to be 300 or so (wet). And the "S" model has got to be in the 340 or so wet range. So if you take percentages, man it's a huge diff.

320 lbs wet with baggage and all of th stock street stuff on it still ... .. I guess that it will come in at 290 when all of the BS is gone (stock mirrors are 1.2 lbs each)... exhaust etc plus all of the little bits here and there... not to mention about 5 lbs of slime in the tires!

Yep, she's a porker! Which model do you have? That Slime is heavy, but man it's worth it when you're out in the boonies and pick up a nail or ???

Hardly a porker compared to the DR-650 I traded in fer it... or the giant whale "KLR 650" I coulda had.....
