Thanks, Zhooligan

Some of you may remember my "I was wondering post". Don was one of the first to respond, as always, whether it was bike-reltated or not. It was a serious (for me, anyway) question. This is what Don said to me:

"I can understand your dilema. And as a dog person I really understand your attachment. My only question would be as you are approaching retirement and have been fortunate to not have something bad happen to you over the years, is which position puts you in harms way the most? Lots of folks like to be a smart ass about traffic cops etc., but the truth is in many of the big cities etc. stopping heavily armed crack heads in the middle of the night doesn't sound all that safe. You are at a point in your life where your safety should be a factor.

It also seems like a waste of your talent and training to quit the K-9 thing."

As you may have read elsewhere, I'd like to be there for Don's service, but I am having some serious issues with my one of my supervisors regarding my position as a K9 handler. Lots of stuff in the background that you need not have to hear about, but suffice to say its basically about power plays and egos and its domino effect of the job (not an uncommon occurrence in this line of work).

Today I am at a cross-roads of the K9 job that I have waited for for over twenty years. It appears a decision will be made for me today or by the end of the week. Although I raised that (question), I knew deep in my heart what my answer would be.

All kidding aside about cops, donuts, tickets, and the advisarial ribbing about cops (joking or not), Don's gentle words also helped me in my dilema, especially these: "You are at a point in your life where your safety should be a factor. It also seems like a waste of your talent and training to quit the K9 thing."

This post is not about me. Its about a man whom I only fleetingly knew, but whose words, those words above, will stay with me forever. Always looking out for your best interest. Don was only a couple of years older than me, but his words and wisdom was that of man who lived a fuller life than mine at this point in my life and who graciously, unselfishly, and gently shared it with his motorcycle families and friends, as well as lucky fleeting acquaintances. His immediate family and friends are the luckiest ones.

Whatever fate greats me today or in the days to come, I will make the best of it. I'll remember the conversation we had about our dogs during breakfast at Laguna. And Don's words will stay with me. From one "dog person" to another: Mahalo, Zhooligan...you're the best. Aloha...till we meet again.

Nano

you too definitely shared some wonderful personality personality traits nano. u'r two of the most level headed people i know. never get pissed or rude, always answer with something rational, fair, and thought provoking. i admire that in a person, very much. i think it takes a very strong and confident personality not to let things get under your skin, and to always answer confrontational situations with well balanced words. zhooligan did so, threw in a wealth of knowledge and understanding to boot. you dont see that often.

I must say, this news concerning Don has caught me way off-guard.

I just got back from vacation. My condolences definitely go out to Dons family & friends.

I didn't know Don personally, but we chatted via posts a few times and I definitely respected the man. He knew his stuff and was a gentleman to boot.

Godspeed to you Don.
