K&N's stuck
sked service time, change oil, etc. Tried to pull K&N's to clean them & they are jammed in there! I mean, stuck in there like a MF'er. Ok, what's the trick to removing them?
I got so pissed I almost jammed a big screwdriver right thru the middle & destroyed them just to get them out. No amount of prying at the edges (even w/inspection plate out) would budge them....grrrr...
I also notice I got the "sand in the airbox" problem I seem to recall has been mentioned b4. What's that from again? K&N's too pourous?

Dood. With all the trouble folks seem to have with K&N's not sure I'd buy them for my bike.
Wish I knew what to tell you muh man. I probably would have been pissed long ago and pulled out the screwdriver and channel locks.
You DID keep your old filters, right?

You're right dave K&N's Suck. I used a pair of duckbill vise grips to get my K&N's out. I replaced the piece of shit K&N's with some BMC filters which fit perfectly. K&N's!

I just felt your pain last week. I was successful by taking long needle nose pliers and slipping them under where the metal collars are. Get a good grip and pry against the side of the channel where the filters go. It took some careful doing but I got them out ok. After 8,000 miles of bugs grit and grime they didn't look that bad!
The BMC's sound like the way to go if they get ruined. If you put them back in, wrap a piece of packing strap down under the bottoms of each side of each filter. This seems to be much easier the next time. Just tug on the strapping and it will pull them out.

I am really suprised at your issues and problems with K&N filters. You are obviously not qualified to use them. After all you should know that there is nothing wrong with having to pry the fuckers out of your air box with a large screw driver! I have been told that the new version is better, but I must agree that the original version that I have is fucked up.
Everytime I pull them I cringe and grit my teeth. Someday I will have to try the BMC's.
I don't find sand in my airbox though!

Take off the airbox inspection covers...and get your other hand in there to wiggle them out while you pull from the top.

Yah I know, but I'm a clutz & didn't want to scratch up the frame (it's gotta remain pretty inside the airbox or someone might see...)
Besides, it was a phking 102' here yesterday which makes San Franciscan's melt...(as in, I didn't feel like sweating bullets.)
I still got the stockers which came out easy...but I probably should get the BMC's...I still don't recall where the "sand" came from. It's quite small particles so I assume it is what the K&N's don't filter out?

...this is what I do:
1) Chug 1 Corona Extra...stretch, flex, crack knuckles
2) Insert WindhamHills Piano Sampler II CD...enjoy its soothing sounds (for the fiesty ones amongst you, may I suggest John Tesh or Yanni?)
3) Breathe in, breathe out...be at one with yourself
4) Sip second Corona Extra
5) Gather two slot-blade and two Phillips screwdrivers
6) Gently and carefully work the filters out by inserting the slot blades on the sides and capturing the bolt holes with the Phillips...baby steps, little baby steps, no rush, it'll come out...gently, slowly wiggle it out...hear the music...it'll come out...
7) Before you put it back in, slather a good amount of grease on the filter gaskets...it'll help the next inspection...sip your Corona...

I use a screwdriver and some wd40... I stick the screwdriver down each side of filter edge and spray wd40.. Let it set a bit and generally works real easy...

I took mine out with a screwdriver. If you don't want to scratch the paint, stick a small piece of cardboard under the screwdriver. When and if you put it back in,use a flashlight to check that it didn't cave in.

Im guessing you didnt put enough grease on them before the last installation.
My actually forms a vaccuum and pops when I insert a long flat screwdriver down each side.

Soooooooooooo......did the installation instructions say anything about the proper amount of grease to put on the filters? Any tips on how to figure out if you have enough or not? Any tips on how to remove the filters?
Boy, you guys must just be dumb K&N users. I'll bet the product is just fine if you all knew how to use them. (see posts on 'vague' Muzzy steering damper instructions in the Scotts vs. Muzzy debate)
Dave, got delivery of yer basket yet?

Jon....get yer head out of HarryZX12's ass...lol.
Slop some waterproof grease on inside of the guides. Ive had mine out numerous times with no bent pleats or problems.
The neoprene like frame does suck..but for what I paid for the K&Ns..Im not complaining.
If you have a choice, get the BMCs.

The sand in the airbox isn't coming through your filters. I've read a lot about this, and people were reckoning it was left over from the sand-blasting prtocess in the factory.
Anyway, having just taken delivery of a brand new 03 ZX12, I opened my airbox, and guess what? Lots of sand. I'll post the pics when I find a server.
I also noticed that the stock filters don't come oiled as standard, so a good dousing with engine oil was done.
I can't see where the sand could come from apart from the factory - the stock filters are plenty fine enough to catch that shit.
Everyone check your airboxes now!

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions guys, I'll give it another go in the next few days as quite busy this weekend (ARRL "Field Day" if you know what that is...)
quote: Dave, got delivery of yer basket yet?
Ordered it Friday f/Muzzys; figure it will ship Monday. OR is typically about 2 days UPS, so should be in by next Wed./Thurs. I figger. Still need to order Gasket tho; & need to find a way to hold that sucker f/torque'ing the nut. Install ~1.5-2 weeks out I figure.
Next weekend the local Aprilia dealer is having free test rides up in the local twisties of ALL models- gotta go try a Mille R, Falco, etc. (of course gotta ride the Ninja to the event to show it's superiority!) Bay Area folks interested PM me for details...

Turbo,...thank you! I was gonna' ask if anyone greases their filter. I was beginning to think I was the only one!
A healthy dose of waterproof grease around each side and the bottom not only makes for easy removal , but also keeps the "sand?" out of your box.

and one more thing, it doesn't hurt to smear the grease all over the inside of your airbox behind the filters......just to help catch whatever does get through!
