Bike is using oil - ideas?
Recently I've done a reasonable amount of tweaks to my bike. So, I'm not sure which change correlated to my bike using oil. Presumably, none of them would - save the removal of the Kleen Air system.
BUT - My bike will use up about 1/8-1/4 of a quart over about 1k miles. Right about then I'll have to top it off. I have rather inspected the bike and there aren't any obvious leaks.
However, my bike backfires something awful on decel and my carbon pipe is getting discolored on the ends of the can. At the entrance and exit of the can the fibre is getting kinda brownish in color. Don't think a pic will show up. And the carbon deposits on the inside lip of the can is pretty thick. No obvious smoking that would indicate it's burning a bunch of oil.
I have a PC3 and I've loaded the Muzzy map for my Muzzy pipe (Oh, I Mean Daveindaytona's custom map - funny how they are the same, eh?). One wouldn't THINK my bike is running very rich, but it appears by the puff of smoke on throttle blip, backfiring, and carbon in the can it just might be running rich.
So, mods as of late include:
1. Removal of Kleen Air system
2. Installation of Muzzy full system
3. PC3
4. Muzzy manual timing advancer @4 degrees
5. 20w - 50 oil
That's about it.
I don't have block off plates over the ports on the heads - they are coming. But we put silicone in the holes and there doesn't appear to be obvious signs of oil blowing out of the ports - but I'm going to check.
One would assume the viscosity wouldn't matter in this instance. I also switched to the 20w50 after winter time, which is about when I started doing stuff to the bike as well.
Any ideas, fellas? Anyone else using that amount of oil?

What color is the smoke? White or black?
Are there any signs of oil leaking out of the head or the valve cover?
Does the bike appear to be down on power?
Put a harley badge on it somewhere?

There's only one way to fix this problem; install a billet stroker crank, billet bigblock, forged pistons, big cams, port the head and lots of nitrous. After that you should be good to go as far as oil consumption goes 
Oh wait that's just my solution to everything.

Allright you fuckers. Ain't going stock, and haven't lost any power. Smoke is rather black - oil is white, right?
Inspected outside of engine - no obvious leaks anywhere. Detailed search coming soon.
Lucky, you are the Powell Pud Puller.
YCIS - Harley badge? I said it wasn't leaking oil.....

Oil is gray, water (blown head gasket) is white fuel is usually black. Sometimes when your really rich fuel will contaminate the oil.
Check your airbox. I had a problem like this and found oil in the airbox coming from the crankcase vent. I solved it using Bergies suggestion and have not leaked a drop since.

Bored, stroked, balanced, built you name it, and NOS. zero oil consumption! Does burn an above normqal amount of race fuel though!

That is not big oil consumption. If you ride around at high RPMs the oil will vaporize and get sucked up into the air box and through the motor. If I ride around normally, it uses almost nothing, when I dial it up for long periods and especially when it is hot it will use some oil . You might try to switch brands of oil if it really bugs you.

Thanks Ted, He had me worried.
I can tell my oil level drops in the window after 500-1000 miles.
But that includes about 50 1/4 passes.
I just change the oil.

Ted, I can attest that he has had it SERIOUSLY wicked up ever since his last oil change. I MEAN SERIOUSLY!
A week at the Gap, chasing after Lucky and Ninjaman, then 700+ miles of more exit darkies, more high speed runs, shifter/peg scraping and complaining that the bike is now geared too low for the kind of top end speeds he's interested in.
If that won't vaporize a cc or two of oil, I don't know what will.

Okay, okay. I'll quit worrying about it.
And yes, I have been running the dog shit out of the bike. Guess I'll just need to really keep an eye on the oil - not that I didn't before, but since I'm now keeping the RPM's stratospherically high I should expect it.
By the way, my little Zook doesn't do that and I run the shit out of it.
