Valve clearance checking (pics)
Ok...first off on the valve clearance....the book sucks...and im guessing at some of this stuff...so please feel free to correct me
Pic 1 shows Crankshaft at TDC for cyls 1 and 4 (in this case its where cyl 4 has all 4 valves closed.

This is going on the assumption that the books says Piston ordered 1,2,3,4 from left to right (I assumed this means left to right as you are sitting on the bike). Thus making the cyl closest to the cam chain #4.
Now on to pic 2...also aimed at #4 (I hope)....this clearly shows the cam lobe in the horizontal position which to me would tell me the valve is closed and thus I should be able to slide a feeler gauge inbetween the lobe and the spring/valve and measure the clearance correct?

Now for the bad news. It says the minimum clearance for the intake valves is .15...well I can get a .15 feeler gauge in there...but it takes a nudge or so to get it to slide in (it doesnt go freely). This would lead me to believe that the valves are very tight and perhaps in need of shims.
Anywhoo...those of you who have been there/done that...correct any of my interpretations....Im going to wait till someone confirms or refutes this before I start doing more of them.
As for the compression....it read 155, 165, 185, 175 left to right (as sitting on the bike).
I felt the #1 was way off..so I did it again making sure to get a good tight seal with the compression gauge..and it read 175 on my next test.
So this would make it 175, 165, 185, 175 which isnt grand...but its within spec (150 - 220 range).

mm? What the hell does mm mean???
I'm still mm stooo-ped on some things and like to go by inches for valve adjusting...
Don't get me wrong though...one of the few numbers I have remembered or years is the metric conversion 1mm = .03937" forgive me for not taking it out to the next decimal
ANYWAY... .15mm is a pretty thin/FLIMSY peice of steel so...if you CAN get it in there without crinkling it all up...and it pulls out smooth and easy??? I'd say your fine...
We CAN do a valve job on yer head here if I'm wrong though...LOL!!!
Yes the cyl. are as you sit on the bike...
No the book doesn't suck (I guess you've never seen a SloZuki book???)
If you go by the pictures on page 4-19...you know...the circles (don't check) and black dots (measuring valves) you'll be fine...
If you still have doubts about a couple being "on the edge?" try turning the motor a few degrees backwards...re-check clearance...then go forward to TDC...re-check...then a few degrees past TDC...re-check...
If the .15 goes in easier at any of these points??? your fine...
I also dread having to R&R the cams to do only one or two valves that are on the edge...if the guage isn't tight coming out don't worry about it...
If it IS? and you DO have to change a couple??? The GOOD news is...I can assure you that you will never have to do it again...unless some just plain goes wrong in the motor these things are UNREAL when it comes to things like the valves holding adjustment...

kcadby,
Are you goading me?
It's you're.
"...you're fine." (You are).
You did that just to piss me off, didn't you?
So, I'd say you ARE wrong.
But I don't know shit about valve clearance. Looked at the book a couple of times and didn't really catch how the hell to do it. Then I just decided they'd be okay.

Hate to admit it jon but...I real-ee AM that stoo-ped when it comes to english...
(looking for dictionary to see what goading means) I AM SMART enough to figure it out though
HATED it in school and...besides going to a realy-REALLY bad High School (in Florida), Comercial DeepSea Diving school and lifes lessons...I'm NOT very edg-e-mu-cated
I DO get by though
I've met some "engineers" that couldn't find there way out of a po-ta-to sack...if it wasn't part of they're schooling also
Well...enough of a dinner break...I think I'll go run a ZX12 that's ill on the dyno to see what's wrong with it. Pretty sure he smoked the TPS..it did test OK but I'm getting codes on it AND the IAPS...
If I'm right it's gonna be gag-eee rich

Ok dammit....im going to measure all these bastards...and then put the sumbitch back together and let the dyno tell me if there is somethin wrong or not
I stole the 929 tonight to go for a ride for the first time in a month....god I miss it.
2 things...HONDA SEATS SUCK...and what gives with the crappy vibration dampening on the grips.....my hands feel like they have both gone to sleep.
Peppy little bike though....then again...I havent been in/on anything faster than my truck in a month

I had to adjust one of my valves, it was a little too tight. It's not that bad getting the cams out and back in. It looks intimidating, but it went pretty easy. The hardest part is getting it all bolted back down and in place with the chain on right. I musta counted the links 50 times just to make sure it was right. (that's not saying it was going bad, just that I wanted to make DAMNED SURE that I had it right)
If you are pretty mechanical, it goes pretty well with the manual.
When I got the shim in question out, I could not read the markings on it. So I took it to the dealership and went back to service. One of the old mechanics measured it and went back and got me a different shim, charged me about $3.
