speedo not working
hello all, just finished putting a 2002 ZX12 together, gages sweep when key is turned on, RPMs work but MPH dont, and the miles dont clock, could I have missed hooking up a wire or does it sound like the gage is bad?

I bet its the sensor in the engine ....look right behind the coolant resevoir. thats where you get the signal.

As it's B-model ZX12 the speedo signal goes also to the ECU for speed restriction so if the sensor isn't working there would be an FI-light. If not there is break in the wire or gauge is broken. I'd first check the wire with multimeter for continuity.

If I were you I Wouldn't fix it...I'd wait till I got a speeding ticket, then go to a shop and get a work order or quote showing you had a defiective speedo....
Blammo....reduction in said charge on your court date.

If the gauges sweep it tels that the stepper motor in the gauge is working and it's just waiting the signal. I'd first check the wires that they're not broken. If it shows continuity then check that there is voltage (multimeter in AC mode). If there is Then it's something inside the cluster. You can check the signal by raising Your rear wheel and putting it on gear. Then just measure that You have voltage at the gauge. If You don't have a service manual - get one...
