01 forks vs 04 forks

so I bought a set of 2004 forks for my 01... to my complete suprise.....the 04 forks are 1 3/4 inches longer than the 01. My 01 was used when I bought it and the 04 forks are used as well... so I am assuming that either set of forks were modified????? maybe short blocks for lowering,,,,, can't see the two years having that big of a difference in fork length????? anyone know???
