Isn't there a grey ring around the socket at the back of the housing? Remove the wire plug (a bitch). You then turn that retaining ring 1/4 turn CCW and pull it back over the socket. Then grab the socket assy and work it back and out (without turning). The sockets stick in the housing because of the o-ring.
BTW- the clear lens at the front is not removable It comes with the entire housing. At least that's the way it works on my Durango.

My 2000 is easy to get too. Pop the hood an go in from the sides. Simple.

the only way in from the back is to remove the airbox/intake, not that big a deal, but that is the only way in, because it is blocked otherwise.
i removed the headlight assy, 3 bolts and a hard pull and out it came. much easier in my opinion.
dodge corp are morons for designing it this way, shoulda been a lot easier.
thanks

Wait a second...you still have the "airbox"...lol. Put a K&N cone filter on that and relocate the air temp sensor into the fender.

Probably pick up ~3-7hp and gets rid of that restrictive airbox.
THe temp sensor will lean the motor out once it heats up. (Im assuming you have a 360motor) Putting it in the fender makes it run in "cold" mode.
A PCM would pick the performance up too. The Dakotas/Durangos have FI that "learns" so to speak. Thats the reason for the 4 o2 sensors.

OHMYGOD! You're still running the stock air filter? Oh never mind.....
By all meanes go with the K&N cone and re-locator kit. While you're under there put in a 180 deg.thermostat. (cooler=richer)
I used a "Jetchip" module.
