External Oil Cooler

I was wondering if anyone has installed an external oil cooler on a A1 ZX12?

Not aware of ever seeing one. In any case it woudn't help your low speed heating issues.

It would help with the heat exchange in the oil just like a V-twin with an oil cooler. In turn help keep the engine cooler.

I'm sure you could figure it out. A lot of water cooled bikes have oil coolers. My Concours has an oil cooler just below the radiator.

I think he's talking about a real oil cooler that looks like a radiator.

I am talking about a real oil cooler. I know there is an oil cooler on the bike. I was asking if anyone has installed an external cooler. I just wanted to ask a few question. I plan to do it to my A1 in the near future.

Rock,

Your best bet would be to get the Muzzy filter relocation kit for the ZX12 and install a "real" cooler in one of the lines.

Can`t hurt to keep your oil cooler any way possible right? Probably one of those tran.`s coolers might work pretty cool.

The relocation kit was the way I was going go and use a universal oil cooler from the local speed shop.

just use a quality synthetic oil. No need for low tech oil coolers on that bike

Of course Yuo can always do it, but why. If Doug hasn't seen one it certainly isin't needed And if the oil is too cold it isn't good either - have You checked the oil temperature to see what it really is? And why make things more complicated than needed? If it works don't fix it!

The oil gets too hot whyle iddling in rush hour traffic here in the MD DC area . Some of you need to bring your bikes here and expereince the heat from the pavement and thousands of vehicles on the roads. It almost makes you not want to ride your bike during rush hour.

C'mon Doug. That's a somewhat technical question. Why would someone want to actually find out if it was an issue, before they try to re-engineer this thing.
We all know that the guys that built this bike in the first place, are lacking a bit in the smarts dept

It's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk....
Or "it's hotter than a fresh F'd Fox in a forest fire!!

It's Hotter than being a 1/4 mile under the sun here in Arizona?!?!

LEAN bikes run hot. I would properly richen up your idle and just above idle sectors.

Increaase your H2o content and / or use water wetter or equivalent.

Get a Muzzy Aluminum fan and put in an overide swith so YOU can turn it on when you come to a stop.

Listen to these guys here, no need to goof around with some kind of "Harley" external cooler.

Good Luck!

I have evething done to both my bikes 01 zx9 and 00 zx12 that you are talking about. I was looking into a small universal oil cooler not a harley oil cooler. Also both bike have been dyno tuned so that they don't run lean.

So...... If you have done all these things.......

Why does or that you feel the 12 still runs hot?!?

My engine runs 190-202 h.p. depending on Dyno and day. Very, very close to 14:1 CR and I do not have hot running issues.

H.P. does make heat and the 12's system does very well with the proper minor mods.

BTW, you do run an oil cooler stock. That is why having the cooling system run as efficient as possible does the most good.

Hmmmm... maybe you have some air in your cooling system?!?
