Im a complete F**king Idiot!!!
I can't believe the dumb $hit I'm capable of! Ok all this time I've been looking at going with full sythetic and a K&N filter for my next oil change. So time goes by and like a idiot I keep saying" I'm going to change the oil this weekend." and for the last two -three weeks! Well during this whole time I never bothered to look at the oil glass cause hell I'm changing the oil this week.
Well I got to reading about how the 12 wakes up after 10,000 RPMs. So on the way home from work I've been hitting it the last mile and 1/2 or so. Well Friday I did just that and the 12 was winding down and it started ticking on the top of the motor really bad and running like crap loss of power. It was hot already but it died when I came in my drive way. Tried to start it again and nothing. Checked the oil and nothing in the window!!!! The bike does not leak! The bike took a little over a quart and 1/2! WTF!!
After it cooled off it fired right up. I ran it up and down the road and it ran fine. I'm not riding her until I get a oil change. My bike mechanic friend said to change the oil ASAP and check to make sure I don't have gold in the oil pan!
I had a guy on another web site say that he went through a very simular issue with his 12 and not less then a week later he spun the lower bearings!
So after the oil change am I subject to having to baby it for the rest of it's days? What do you guys think?

How bad was it ticking /knocking? Makes me wonder why it was ticking/knocking. How low was your oil level, how much did you add? Might have been dry in the cam area and that was the ticking noise, if your lucky. These motors just love LOTS of oil. No particles in your oil?
Cross your fingers from now on.

I had to add more then a quart and a half to get the oil level between the lines on the glass. The sound was with out question on the top of the motor. when I took it for a spinn and when I rev 7000 -8000 RPMs no noise at all.
Oil Change - I'm going to go full synth and a top quality filter so it will take a week or two to do my oil change. (parking it til then ) I will check at that point to see if any metal is in the oil.
fingers are crossed so hard I think they will break. I wil not have time to get in my garauge until the week end! The next few days is like being water board!!!

Drop the oil pan!
you will get a real look at whats going on.
Sometime you dont get the gold in the oil drain until its too late.
If you catch it early you may save the crank.
Wishing you luck on the whole deal.

My local guy does not have a gasket for the pan in stock. I have one on order. But in the mean time I have drained the oil and went through it with a 2.4 lb magnet and no metal! I take that back I did have a very small amount of glitter on the magnet. So I changed the oil and took her up the street. She did fine until I got home and killed the motor. The bike was hot and would not start again until it cooled down. The FI light would only flash when I hit the start button. But as soon as it was cool the bike ran fine again?
A few people have told me that I could have had a air bubble in the oil and that caused the FI light alert. The bike runs hot (it always has) but more then usual it seems. So I'm going to remove the thermostat and see what happens. Any other suggestions would be apprecieated.

i would not remove the thermostat. sometimes depending on the system they can run hotter. i know i may of opened up a can of worms but it happens by the water needing a restricter to slow the flow through the rad so it can dissapate the heat. not all systems will do this but it may.
put the thermostat on a pot of water and a meat thermometer and stur the water so it heats evenly and see what temp it opens up at.

It was a cooler day today. So I took the twelve for another test ride. everything is fine as I'm gaining speed. but it seems to have trouble when I'm down shifting or I back out of it an it's time to idle. There is no engine noise but it died when I went to turn around and I did not down shift I just grabbed the throttle and tried to allow it to idle as I turned. She died and started back up and was fine on the way home but once up to temp she did not want to start! The battery is new and kept on a trickle. the starter seems ok . The temp was at 9 oclock . Man where do I go from here?

Chango,
Take it easy and start eliminating some things. Another good way to diagnose the bottom end is to cut open the oil filter. There is a tool to do that, but you can also just carefully hacksaw around the can part just below the ridge on the mounting end. Take the guts out and spread the paper out flat. If the bearings are toast you'll find it all in there. It's unlikely that your bike would stop making noise once it started if it was hurt, but it's possible. Don't worry about the heat, it's not getting hot enough to hurt anything. Taking out the thermostat won't change anything except it may run cooler (don't get me started). Verify the condition of the bottom end first. Check the battery with a load tester. Check some of this stuff and let us know what you find. You could even have a regulator /rectifier problem (they act up with heat as well), are your headlights acting normally?
Sometimes two things coincidentally show up at the same tome and it's easy to get confused unless you eliminate things you know you can check.
