18/50 gears! The Best set up for trac and street.
hey guys, i've seen a few old posts about the best gearing for the zx12r. I own only my 00' ZX12R. I have no other transportation. since i bought it with 8k a little over a year ago it has blown two clutches and stators and junction boxes and rectifiers and countless other parts and $$$. Since i have owned it has been down 8 months out of 15. The bike now has 38k (30k in 7 months) and runs awesome. I love my 12 with all of its problems and the lack of after market bits. Ok, now to business. I have put a serious beat down on the following gear combos. 17/46 (quick acceleration but twitchy) didn't like this setup, 17/37 is close to stock 18/46. 17/41 (nice hyw gearing, still tryin to shift into 7th sometimes though little better than stock) 17/45 ( oh yeah! BUT with an extended swing arm the chain will eat your ride as it drags on the swing arm sometimes. smaller front sprocket will stretch your chain faster. stock length bikes have it made though. 17/46 (same as 17/45 almost just a bit more acceleration) 19/anything not worth it less it is 45 or more in the rear, you will take forever to hit top speed but it will be way up there. Now 18 in the front is perfect if you have an assortment of rear gears as i do. 18/37 (big top end but nearly unreachable unless on spray or big cc bikes w/ a few miles of strait ahead. 18/41 (perfect hwy gearing, no more looking for 7th gear!) 18/45 (little quicker than stock and will help at the trac.) 18/50 (beautiful speed throughout the range, great acceleration and a 205mph top end, with the speedo over reporting your speed from the factory and the big rear gear under reporting the same speed they nearly perfectly cancel out to give an actual 205mph on the clock. now it maybe 203-204mph on the radar if i can find one but i am hooking up a gps next time out to answer this question of real speed. i love the 18/50 whip. There are probably better gearing combos out there but hope this helps with gear choices, some of you may have had different experiences with these gears but i have a 1272cc w/ 50-100hp nos to play with so forgive me if your ride feels different aight. gears that i have are 17,18,19 front and 37,41,45,46,50 rear. DeathProof out.

With 18/50 gearing and a stock rev limit the bike will top out in the low 170's mph range, depending on the tire height.

hope to stretch out the 18/50 set up for you guys this weekend. I will have a friend in a chase car with a camera and I want to get a camera on the gauges but have no where to mount it because I am going to have my chin flat on the tank. I can see the speedo hit 205mph with the 18/50 gears. Does that mean that i have a 35mph+ error in the clock if this setup is only good for 170's, why even have a speedo then if it is that far off. A larger rear sprocket will show your speed as less than it is actually. so any error should be averaged out I think. I could be wrong, I have been many times but I do know what I have done. I am not just thinking about these gears but have run them for 3 miles flat out. At around see level on 117 race gas and 12,000 revs. the bike may look like junk but it's built.

My bike hit the rev limiter at 189 mph actual speed (gps and timing light verfied) with 17/45 gearing. That is roughly only +1.5 gearing overall...vs. +4 at 18/50.

shane666, is your bike big cc, nos, mine revs to 12k (nice drilled and balanced, knife edged crank helps). I have roughly no oem kawasaki internals left, all falicon and the like. what would that many revs do to the top end?

If you are talking about 12k rpm on the factory tach, that is about 11400 actual (the tach is optimistic). I regularly shifted my stock motor bike at 12k rpm on the tach.
Regardless of the engine mods, gears are gears. Unless you have extended your rpm you are not going to get any more speed out of your 18/50 geaing than a stock motor bike.
Even if you are pulling to 12k actual rpm in top gear, you will not see anywhere near 205 mph on 18/50 gearing.

Right on that....
There`s a difference between being quick and being fast......
You can be quick to get through the gears but not be very fast......
Or you can be slow through the gears(19/44 + or -) and be very fast......
Listen hard to these guys , and they will steer you in the right diection.....
I`m more into dragracing so I can`t offer too much info on topend stuff......

got that backwards. big rear sprockets inflate your speedo readings.

If you want to play around with different gearing combo's to get a rough idea of the speed potential, go here:

Don't forget to subtract a few percent for slip/wheelspin.

NOX, That`s about 1 tooth different than what I`m running (17/52=3.12 ratio) you are (16/50=3.05 ratio)....And shifting at 11,000 I go through in 5th, without the shiftlight coming on in 5th at the line....So are you shifting earlier than 11,000????Maybe it`s the power difference??? 1 tooth shouldn`t be that much different.....Maybe it`s the Mickey you run....That`s gotta be it....
What are you geared at Scott???

122 to 124, on my good map.
118 to 119 top of 3rd in 9.50 trim.
MCR.
First gear has a lot to do with it. A lot of guys run 1st out too long, due to bog. my light is set at 11,700.
When I get all out of this hays, I will probably end up going 16/51
Good fuel, 495lb bike.

both are 1287s i put together. mine has a little bit more work tho. stock rev limit 11600(just a little over 12000 on the tach)
my bike would run 147s in good air with a stock motor. hit one 148. thats a slow pass for me now
work on your tuck Paul. im guessing you have your head up, and ass in the seat the whole way?(kinda like dad) hes gone 148 in good air with half a tuck(head down). hes over 265 in leathers. new diet plan after xmas lol
btw, my quickest and fastest times at the end of this season were with a 200 shinko. my tire guy was out of 190s. dad was running a 7 in slick
