Y2K Timing mod on an 02?

I just modified my pickup for more timing as per the Y2K mods and I am wondering if it was a bad idea? I know an advancer would be my best bet but I don't have the cash and wanted the mod before a trip on Sunday. Any feedback?

I was also wondering if anyone knows about how much advance you can get out of the mod? I ground part of the shoulder off of a stock bolt and slid it up as far as I could using that bolt. I don't want any more than 3-4 degrees if possible.

Back when this mod came out the word was 2.5 - 3.0 degrees.
