Bike Storage
it will be getting cold here in N.C. in a couple of months...soon it will be time to force the old twelve into hibernation...is it okay to run a fuel injected bike completley out of gas?...will that cause the fuel injectors to get clogged?...and what other things should i do to prepare the twelve for hibernation.

I do just the opposite. I fill the tank (right to the top) and add fuel preservative and go for a short ride to get it through the system. Then I park the bike and put it on stands so the tires are off the ground. Then I hook up a battery tender to maintain battery charge through the winter. Done till spring. -ZXtra

Make sure if you are running race fuel that you don't store the bike with that fuel in it. Race fuels have some pretty nasty stuff in them that will eat fuel system parts, seals etc. If i am really storing the bike for the winter I fill the tank with pump gas and a fuel stabilizer, run the bike for a few minutes to get the stabilizer in the system and top the tank off. I using the battery tender, set the bike on both a front and rear stand and throw a cover on it. At the end of the storage I siphon the tank empy (burn the old fuel in the lawn mower and pressure wsher!) and out fresh fuel in and change the oil.
But here in the Northwest I can usually get 3 or 4 days each month to ride a few miles so I don't really winterize much here.

Im make an offer to you guys that have an "off season" for riding. I will gladly store your bikes in my climate controlled garage for free. Just make sure the oil is fresh and the tires are new before dropping it off. Then in March, come on down to Bike Week. Your bikes will already be in FL....lol

I cant constant charge the battery cause it's in a storage unit I rent out, no electrical hookups.
I usually disconnect the battery, is that alright to do?
I do fill the tank, and run it for five minutes with the stabilizer. Do I have to use a swingarm stand or is the stock bike stand good enough??

For you guys storing the bike over the winter, I would remove the battery and keep it on a "floating" charger like the battery tender.
Fill the tank all the way to the top and make sure you use something like Stabil in the tank. YOU should never let the pump run dry. Gas is the lubricant for the fuel pump. If you drain it completely, the gas will turn to varnish and end up clogging the pump. Trust me, Ive already had the pleasure of trying to "revive" a fuel pump after long storage...not fun!
Give the bike a final once over and clean it like its going into a show! Then cover it and leave it. DONT start it or go near it until the snow has cleared or its warm enough to ride...lol

I'd take the battery out and bring it home with you.
If I had stands I'd use them, keeping the tires off the ground would be a good idea.

I'm purposely not replacing my tires at the moment cause I figure I'll just put the new ones on as soon as I take it out of storage at the end of winter. Why put new tires on when I cant ride it. So if I'm replacing the tires anyway, and also cause I dont have any stands for my 12, will I hurt anything else by parking it with the kickstand???

Nope.
It's a good idea to change the oil before you put it up for the winter, and the fuel stabiliser of course.
I usually don't even mess with the battery myself. I ride often enough in the winter that it stays good, and if we have a long cold snap I'll start it and let it get fully warm every couple of weeks.

Bean... A trick for your storage unit is to go to the hardware store and buy an screw in plug that will screw in the light bulb socket in your storage unit. The make units that will screw in the light socket that will enable you to screw a light bulb in it as well as plug a cord in it. A battery tender draws very little power. I do this in my storage unit to power a air drier in the winter. It certainly will work with your battery tender. The plug costs about $2.

ZH, I do the same except I use one light socket of the garage door opener, put the regular old 50/10/2 amp charger on 2 and plug it in. Now every time I back the cage out I get a 3 minute charge and I didn't have to buy a Battery Tender. FWIW
