Exhaust Header Install Question
I've wrapped the stainless Muzzy headers on my 02 ZX12R. Now, trying to install them I can't figure out how to hold the new copper pinch gaskets in place while wrangling the headers and flanges into position.
I thought maybe a dab of grease would hold the gasket against the port in the head, but I'm not sure if the grease is such a good idea. The pipes don't line up with the ports on the head so perfectly that they just slide right in. I have to push and pull slightly to get them in the port openings.
Any advice on how I can hold the gaskets in place while lining the headers up?

Grease works great:

I just installed a new exhaust yesterday on my 14...no leaks...and it's not the first time I've used grease for this purpose.

Get some Permatex ultra copper gasket sealant. That is what I used. I reused the origional copper gaskets, but I turned them around so the headers would seat against a flat surface. It worked perfect for me, no leaks, and the gaskets stayed in place perfect!

Just an FYI on the Permatex...it is rated to 700 degrees. Exhaust gas temps are over 1300.
That is why I use grease. The gaskets are designed to seal without any other sealant...the grease burns off pretty quickly once you start the bike. I also use new gaskets, though...so to each their own.
Good luck with whatever you choose, I know it is a pain when those gaskets keep falling out!

Thanks for the quick reply! Maybe I'll get this thing buttoned up yet tonight. I want to check the carb synch and I know when I start it up for the first time with the header wrap it'll smoke like a chimney until the wrap and sealant cures. With your quick reply, I'll be able to do the carb synch tomorrow and then finally RIDE!!!

I usually use the grease, but in some case`s I use the Permatex stuff just because it`s a little stickier, and thicker....I don`t care if it stays or goes after start, just as long as those freakin exh. gaskets stay there till the header is bolted on....Usually it just burns out through the pipe....If you put the greas on like Shane`s pic. you shouldn`t have a problem stickin it in the port.....JMO.....
