what to do look for after engine build is finished

ok well i got a call from my engine builder saying the bike will be done this week guaranteed alot of things have been done that just dont make sense to me

1. before tearing the motor out and startng the build he never did a base dyno on the bike??? like how am i supose to know how much of an improvement the bike made before and after seat of the pants aint gonna cut it being i havent sat on the bike since january

im hoping he didnt rush to finish up the job but what i want to know is what should i look for or ask for before taking the bike back im going to ask him to dyno the bike right than and there to see what kinda numbers post but outside of that i really dont know what to ask for air /fuel ratio ect...

im starting to wish i took my bike to either ace performance or carpenter

genarally a stock bike is around 155 hp at the wheel, piped, 175ish. but a lot of that is dependant on conditions. ask him to map it a little rich say 12.8:1. higher than 13 will give better dyno numbers, but is a bit too lean to give best real world performance. my top picks would be Ace or Coby Adams

Tell him thank you and don't worry about the numbers which can be all over the place. Why would you want to throw it on the dyno before you break it in?My bike was 159 with a pipe so you can see how much it varies. It sounds like you have some expectation of what it needs to be or you will be disappointed. What exactly did he rebuild? Was it bored or stroked, head work, cams replaced or degreed?

Yes, for goodness sakes, break it in right!

Break in is MORE important than the Idiot that built it! The rings need 500 Miles tro seat and I would use the Cheapest Honda or Kawasaki Oil I could find. Understand that break in is about making the Peaks and Valleys on the unsmooth surfaces closer together and to match each other.

A Peak will heat up and then Swell if allowed to be heated for too long a period of time! What I am saying is run it for about 50 miles at 3 to 4,000 Rpms then take it up to 8,000 and then go back to the 3 to 4,000 rpms> Also ride like a Harley Jerk! "On and OFF the gas all of the time! this will allow heating and the cooling of the peaks to smooth them out! About every 50 miles gas it real hard to heat it up and then go slowly to cool everything.

After a few hundred miles I would gas it up to 10,000 rpms and then at 400 Miles I would take it to redline in a few gears about every 25 to 50 miles. When you have abour 500 to 600 miles on the new engine, then change the oil to the same cheap oil and ride it more normally for the next 1,000 Miles "THEN CHANGE to a SYN OIL!

I think you will be pleasantly pleased with the bike when you get it back.If you can come back and complain that you are using the bike to the fullest potential then maybe the builder should be different next time.Just ride the bike, have fun and don't let your ego write checks that you can't cash.

as far as a break in, i change oil way sooner on my builds and such.. just my .002 :@

i've built a few race quads and dirtbikes, and i kinda do the "motoman method" on them.. a few romps and about 20 min of on/off riding below 70% throttle then i change oil, then finish breakin and inspect oil again for the shiney content.

looks good, i tell the customer change in in 2 days or 8- hours of riding roughly.. looks nasty, i change and run again to make sure it's not canniblizing itself..lol

B-more.. glad you got the bike back man!! i was worried i was gonna hafta make a trip up there and help repo your shit.. hahaa

I leave it in a little longer to use the Metal in the oil the help like valve lapping compound have a fine grit in it. If the "Engine" is Broke in, and I am seating new rings, I use SA Rated oil for about 50 miles which really allows the rings to seat!

thats actually a good idea! never heard of that.. kinda was always fearful of clogging a piston skirt squirter with noo much crap floating around and accumulating..

awesome tho.. thanks Mr. Hill!!

i am still a little wary of pushing on a fresh rebuild too hard and with lots of metal in thre.. the oil in quads and dirtbikes thins out so much that you'd think it's water. always worry about compromising viscosity..
