F-1 Car Clutch!
Did anyone see the F-1 Clutch assembly out of an F-1 Car on Sunday? It was about the size of the clutch Pack in Peggy's 250 Ninja! it has to handle 850 to 900 HP and it tiny! The transmission is hooked directly to the engine and the clutch is directly to the transmission. The reason I mention this is the ZX12 clutch is smaller then the ZX14 but the 12 has at least twice as much clutch as the F-1 Car

It probably had NOX's lock up clutch..........

I saw it Vincent...............my eye's bugged out..........  I just put a Rekluse Clutch,Basket and Plate's in a customers CRF 450 Friday, and it was much bigger than the F1 clutch. Truly amazing.
Did you hear them talking about accelerating and deaccelerating engine mass? ( rotating assembly ) From WAYYY up there in rpm's to total engine stop in 2/10ths of a second. No flywheel weight there huh? 
That really was shocking.........the size ( or lack of ) that clutch basket............

Warbird, We all Know what is "possible" and what is not Possible and the Jewlers Watch size of that Clutch Basket was UN BELIEVABLE!! Yes I heard the 2/10th of a second and talk about QUICK Revs (Either way)! I have never cared that much for the F-1 Cars because everything is soo Secret! now that I have seen this, I have a LOT Better appreciation for what MONEY can buy you!
NOX, the ENTIRE Assembly could be HIDDEN between your 2 hands! I never knew what they were using but trust me it was never this!

save for starting & pitting the clutch has very little to do with the electronic upshifting
blipping achieved by the ecu. nascar went to a 2 plate clutch which reduced rotational inertia. the biggest advantage was it eliminated to a great degree the pressure against the flywheel. which on tracks where they did have a lot of shifting ot pit stops, was banging the
hell out of the crank thrusting it foward, causing low end reliabilty problems.

i was down to road atlanta for the american le mans series, some of the ferrari gt2's were having trouble leaving the pits
sounded awful like the drivers literally didnt know how to drive. some of the other cars had a programmed pit idle [essentially a very fast idle] far easier to handle & NOT choke. essentially the tyres become the clutch when leaving. the audi diesel the epitome of excellence damn thing soooo smoooooth. the porsches racing at a distinct disadvantage, different class yet they have snagged an overall win on occasion. some of that technology filtering down to hi end street cars ill never be able to afford.

Been mentioning this for years in the clutch discussions when people talked about how "weak" the 12 clutch was and how it "slipped". A 12 clutch will hold 500 hp without slipping. Do you believe me now? I gave up. The 1200 hp Turbo Can Am engines I built in 1973 had an 8 inch 8 plate clutch. An Indy car has a 8 inch or smaller clutch. The new clutches are carbon but the old ones were fiber and steel like a bike clutch.
If you, the driver or rider slips the clutch and overheats it, it's toast. If not it will hold all the power it is designed for. Clutch life is all in the technique. A driver who tries to slip these clutches can cook it in one try. That's why they light the tires.

Dr. Doug, SEEING is Believing! There is Just NO way to imagine something that small doing what it does! Yes, the clutch in a ZX12R is HUGE (Now) by comparrison!

Thanks KZ, I did not know the diameter but 4 inches "LOOKED" about right but I just could not bring myself to say it was THAT small!

For a 50 CC Dirt Bike about right., but for 800 HP Not in my Brain can this be true! You could put the entire clutch in you pocket and not look excited! Like I said, I have a NEW Appreciation of F-1

There is so much more to clutches. Size is a factor, but there are many more, that can affect things, and actually make the size not so much a huge factor.......
