Bike Stolen

Came home from work today and noticed that my bike was not in its usual place.

Looked around the base for it and then went to the Base Police. I guess it was my lucky day, as they found it unattended somewhere on the base. It appears to be unharmed and will be released later this evening.

Good thing it wasn't the ZX-12R or DR-Z400! It was just my mountain bike! Served as a great wake-up call for me to lock up my shit and not make it so easy for the low-lifes to take it. Guess I've just become very complacent about locking things up, as I've lived onboard a military base for the last 16 years.

Be safe and keep your valuables under lock and key!

Glock works well, but sometimes they leave scars...lol

Depending on your living situation.
In college, I lived in an apartment on the 3rd floor. I used to ride an XL500 everyday to school. One morning I found my bike on its side. From then on it was ridden straight up the stairs with it everyday to the apartment..lol. I was eventually asked to leave..lol.
If you have a garage keep it in there. If you dont have a garage a cheap mobile alternative is an enclosed trailer.
Those can be had for $500-2000 depending on your needs/likes.
If money is an issue, the Cobra lock with a weatherproof cover will provide adequate protection for under $200.
If you have access to tools, you can drill some holes in a concrete driveway and use hydraulic cement for chain anchors so you bike cant be hauled away.
Disc locks may work ok, but could do more damage if you or a thief forgets its there.
Insurance is your best bet, but also expensive. Some of my bikes are worthless to insure, but I would be out big $$ if they got stolen. I ride those less..lol.

TurboBlew,

Yes, I still live in Mayport. Looks like we'll be in the JAX area for a couple more years. Both of my kids are going to UNF and it will save us some bucks to have them live at home. We live onboard Naval Station Mayport now, but will be moving out into town next spring. I can retire next fall, but haven't decided for sure if I'm calling it quits after 20 years or not. If I can stay at my present job for three additional years, it will be hard to pass up. I travel some and have to get underway on different ships, but get compensated for it. When I'm not on a training mission, I only work two or three hours a day.

It's going to be culture shock for us when we move out with the "regular" people. We have lived in base housing for the last 16 years or so and have really felt secure. I always felt better about leaving the family for six months at a time, knoweing that they were safe and secure onboard the base. There is a sense of security living onboard a military base, although I'm not sure if that is just a false sense of security.

I have always left my bikes and other toys unsecured in the carport or the attached workshop and never had a problem. Guess I need to re-think that and protect my property a little better. We have quite a few contractors working onboard the base these days, and it wouldn't be too hard for them to load something up in one of the utility trailers and leave the base with it.
