thses days, with modern oils, the reasons you have to change the oil though are mainly due to the contaminants in the oil, unburnt fuel etc, mixing with humidity (water) and forming acidic solutions

the longer you leave the oil in, the worse it gets.

that's why even though a syntheteic oil can be good viscosity wise to 20k miles, it is still preferential to change it at 3-5k intervlas depending on your riding styles

as for synthetic being overkill, well since it is designed vice distilled from natural, the molecules are made the nominal length for lubrication and stability, and tend to do a better job lubricating than used dinosaurs.

but in all reality and HIGH quality oil changed regularly will do just fine. my mom has a 1993 toyota pickup with 290k on the clocks, used castrol gtx all its life (granted it isnt raced so the heating issue isn't as big a deal)
anyway whenthey ahve had to go into engine (timing chain replacement etc) it has been clean inside, no gummy junk or anything. but that is mainly maintenance, frequent oil changes and good care.

as far as which oil, i run the mobil 1 15-50 from walmart, but if target has the mx4t for 5 bucks, i'll use it instead ;P
the mobil one so far has not done what all the anti-car oil 'experts' have claimed it would do. no slipping clutch (almost 37k on original clutch parts) no odd noises, nothing weird, shifts nice etc. engine still looked pristine inside in october when i had to fix my busted shift forks ;P no suddenonset of oil burning, no leaks due to the synthetic squeezing past the regular oil impregnated seals etc. bah.

the reason i go with the 15-50 is because it doesn't have the friction modifying 'energy conserving' additive package. as far as sj ratings on car oils, the newest yamalube is sj now as well..so much for the 'api ratings being too high' argument.

addng another quarter to age old debate ;P

If you can find the MX4t for under $5, then buy it. In my experience the only way its priced that low is due to an error. The few times Ive bought it, Ive been fortunate enough to pay $1.99/quart, then $2.30. After that, the retailers got hip, when I tried to purchase a "pallet" of it...hehe
I think psycho is talking about the "car" 15-50 Mobil One.
Price clubs (Sams, BJs, Costco) typically carry the 6 packs of Mobil 1 for $21.
Too bad its 1 quart short of being an even "2" oil changes...lol
Walmart has the 1 (5qt) gallon jugs of Mobil 1 from time to time for $18 or so.
Saw a local shop yesterday selling same Mobil 1 for $9/ qt and $16/qt for the Motul 300v. (who pays that?)

Turbo, anyone that wants to pay that for oil, needs to buy their oil from me....I will buy it at walmart, sell it to them cheaper than they are paying now, and still make a profit. I paid 3.89 a qt at the walmart in town for the MX4T....the last 2 times I change my oil. And in response to KOZ, 5000 miles or 1 year????? I dont kno wabout anyone else on the board, but oil will never sit in my bike that long.....Even while I am here, my bikes get started once a week at a minimum, and the oil changed every 3 months or 3000 miles....maximum. Is it overkill, maybe....but moisture will kill a motor as fast as anything, and in southern ga where the humidity is 100% all the time, I am not taking any chances. I usually get about 6 to 8 weeks out of an oil change....then its due by milage....from february02-sept 02 my 12 got 12000+ miles on it, and my 6 got 7000, the 6 is up to about 20000 and its an 01......I bought them to ride em.....when I get back ya'll that are in the GA, SC, and Fl areas....care to ride, I am gonna set a ride up in that area...I usually do about 700 miles on a weekend ride....I like to stop and take pics.....give me a holler....Jim

HDL, one question? How long are they running the bike? With the normal blow-by when cold, there is a lot of fuel polution until the engine is warm and it takes a while after that before it is "Burned" out of the oil! Then the time until the oil has burned off the rest of the pollution stored in it!

Unless it is going out for a ride, I put fresh oil in my bike , Fitch fuel catalyst plus some fuel preservative and hook a battery tender to it! Some times I spray WD 40 over the engine and pipes, but that is about it! I agree with the 3 & 3 for Oil changes except on fresh oil, is may sit 4 months or until Daytona time! Someone I helped get some Motul E-Tech 100 for $7.50 a quart got some for $5.00 a quart and sent that to me! I plan to change oil in both Bikes this weekend before I take the swingarm off!!

She has been taking it out and riding it for about an hour or so when she goes....plenty of time for it to get good and warm and burn all the shit out

Not only is Mobil MX4T the good stuff, even at $8.95 a quart, let us not forget the Mobil 1 PERFORMANCE WARRANTY "IN ADDITION, EXXONMOBIL WILL REPAIR ANY EQUIPMENT DAMAGE DIRECTLY CAUSED BY A DEFECT OR MALFUNCTION OF A MOBIL 1 MOTORCYCLE LUBRICANT, PROVIDED THAT THE LUBRICANT WAS SELECTED AND MAINTAINED IN ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER OR THE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS OF AN EXXONMOBIL SALES REPRESENATIVE." In short, you run Mobil 1 MX4T and have an oil related failure, they will pay to fix it! Good enough for me.

Out of curiousity could you explain an oil related failure? The reason I ask is I have seen many an oil Company make these claims, but oil failures are pretty hard to prove. Did the engine break because the oil made the bearing fail of was the bearing just bad? Just curious.

i have run Klotz full synthetic for years in all my bikes and snowmobiles and it will definately help the clutches last a lot longer by dissapating heat much quicker.
