Poll Question:
Newbies...

They bug us, but who are they?
What line do you think a Newbie has to cross in ordered to be permitted?

What do I think?
I think I have enough respect for my machine to realise that it always has something to teach me.
I am always open to learning more about my machine and ridin better.

And a real NEWBIE - is some one who's got his head so far up his ass he thinks he knows everything!

what do you think?

Is it an attitude that makes a Newbie a Newbie?
Or is it the lack of time in the saddle?

I'd say a combination of attitude and saddle time. Mostly attitude, though. Attitude can also negate years of saddle time, in some cases. I personally am not without "newbie-itis" sin. Fortunately, a healthy dose of humility has quickly followed any flare up of "newbie-itis", I have had. Very quickly followed.

A newbie is someone who aske "is it one up and three down, or have they changed it?", or some one who says they saw Kenny Roberts racing on a Kawasaki at Lagune Seca a couple of years ago. These people should be given a wide berth at all times.

i think you can define a newbie as someone who hasnt dropped their bike yet, or hasnt had a 300 mile day in the saddle, one who still asks questions on basic stuff. I think a newbie cant be defined as how many track days you have done, or my how long you have had a bike...but more closely related to 1. attitude, and 2. common sense, and 3. expierence, some of us learn faster than others.....just an opinion though

I ask what shift pattern when I ride other peoples bike, as I run 1 up and 5 down instead of 1 down and 5 up and I have seen kenny roberts race but he was riding a yamaha.I also like doing wheelies and burnouts (but not in town).I've been riding since 1969 and learn new riding skills all the time cause I watch others closely and ask questions.

Stock motorcycles from Japan have been 1 down and the rest up as long as I can remember,(have been riding since the middle 60's and yes I to have seen Kenny Roberts race several times, but it was always on a Yamaha, the point being, if someone is adiment that they saw Kenny Roberts racing a Kawasaki KZ1000 at Laguna Seca in the 70's, they are name dropping and could tell a Triumph from a Gold Wing, in other words, they are full of shit, have no idea what they are talking about and should be given a wide berth, if not avoided all together, especially if they themselves ride.

My first bike was a brand new 1964 red yamaha 80 and it was 4 down. And I can't honestly recall seeing Kenny Roberts on a Kawasaki ever! But I do remeber a brash, young and faster then hell kid on a Yamaha. I believe theTriumph has a T on it! But I really remeber is a beautiful naked blonde setting on one!

I also remeber my first CZ dirt bike. I couldn't sleep knowing it was in my garage. I remember bringing home my 72 TM 400 Suzuki dirt bike. Always pulled the hole shot, first into turn one and usually last out of it. and then came my 1973 Z1 900. Talk about pipes!! 4 of them!

Oh by the way my Zx12 is 1 up and 5 down. Does that make me a newbie?

ZH, you had a CZ too huh?
Did you have the one with the (scrotal suicide) coffin style fuel tank like I did?
I also found a 400 motor that would swap into the same frame.
Did yours have enough vibration to numb your throttle hand?
Whew, mine was bad, but fun!

I thought the bike did that to shake the mud off! They were crude but tough machines. I was very proud of that bike. When you showed up for a race on it, people crowed around to see it.

Yah, they were tough alright!
I got mine from a friends brother who blew a quarter sized hole in the piston and it sat for a few years in his basement, untouched.
When I got it there was no oil in the tranny.
I did not know this, and after the easy top end rebuild I rode around no problem for at least 20 hours. (not continuous)
My toe was getting sore from the hard shifting so I decided to do a tranny oil change and there wasn't any to drain LOL!
I pulled that easy access plate off the top of the tranny, everything looked fine.
Poured in some oil and then the shifting was so smooth that you could shift it with a bare foot if you wanted to. (silky smooth.)
Ended up selling it before I went into the army and ended up getting a KTM 420 the first week i got to Fort Bliss.
here is a nice example of a newbie for this thread, no helment or gear whatsoever! shameful!
