You have a PM. Its really a pretty simple way of allowing the bike to find neutral when stopped. Basically 3 small 5/32 steel balls that drop into place when stopped keeping the gear from overshifting into 2nd. When your moving centrifugal force flings the balls outward into a groove that allow the gear to slide over the shaft..

If you don't mind could you PM me the same info?!! It would be greatly apprecieated. The guy who had my bike before me replaced a shifting fork and it never had neutral again. I'm a begginer and not very mechanically inclined. But I'm learning!!

I noticed the same thing. With every other bike I've ever owned sliding it into neutral just prior to stopping wasn't a problem but on the 12R (2000 model) it is quite the challenge. I figured it was the way the transmission was built but it's good having the exact explanation.

Kawasaki's have whats called a Positive Neutral Finder. Basically its 3 5/32 steel balls that fit inside the the transmission output shaft. When the bike is stopped and the output shaft is not spinning one the ball bearings drops down into 1 of 3 holes that is crossdrilled into the shaft. That prevents the transmission from overshifting from neutral into 2nd gear. When the output shaft is spinning all three balls fling outward into the holes and line up into grooves on the inside of the gear, allowing it to overshift into 2nd gear..
Or something like that...

The other day I took the 12 out and waited until just before the bike came to a hault to slip it into neutral. It can be done but for all practical purpses by the time things are moving slowly enough for the bike to "find" neutral you're stopped anyway.

Kawasakis have had this feature since 1973.
The Positive Neutral Finder has no bearing on getting from 2nd INTO neutral, it only prohibits being able to select 2nd from 1st when the wheel is NOT turning. When stopped, from 1st you can ONLY get neutral. Downshifting from second into first either stopped or in motion is not changed and you should be able to select neutreal from 2nd if you have a good feel. Any difficulty in achieving this is usually the result of a dragging clutch either from mis-adjusted cable or warped steels.
The only reason to disable this feature is to allow starting a burnout in second without upshifting from first.

Sorry Doug, there is a 2nd reason:
you have the trans apart, those fukken lil balls roll off the bench, hit the concrete floor and bounce into dimension X.

hahahaha yeah allmost happened to me, but when it came back from Mark @R&D the balls were in a bag (trans assembled) so thats where they stayed. i find it much easier to find neutral with the bike off now. otherwise i usually go to second if its running. its no big deal holding the clutch lever in tho, i can hold it in with one finger since it has a NOX tune

Or, starting one in 3rd or 4th. When I ran a 7 inch slick, and 16/56 gear, I did 4th gear burnouts.

Exactly......
Mine are out too. You can get it into neutral while rolling, if you are good, and it goes to second with no issues at all......., will damn near go to 6th without the bike moving at all........
