2005 Zx 12 Problem.

Ok guys i am getting very frustrated with my bike. It is a 2005 zx12 fully stock no mods at all it has 6500 miles on it and every time i take it out the bike will run perfect for about 10 miles and then every stop light i come to it dies it also gets choppy or studders and some times it does not start and throws a code i finnally ran a wire to ground out when this code it thrown and i got a 21 which i read in the manual is the crankshaft sensor. so i go to order one from the dealer and they say it might not be that even though thats the code i am getting ( he tells me he cant find one to order anyway) this makes no since to me. Has any one eles had this problem or can some one please direct me in the right way?
Thanks Brad.

Could be the battery. Is it the original battery? Even if it's not, sitting for long periods in extremes of heat or cold can shorten the life. Charging circuit problem could also be a cause of a weak battery.

sounds like heat is causing a connection to expand.how old is the fuel in the tank.could be fuel pump or filter in tank...clear all codes in the memory then check them again when f.i. light comes back on.

Stupid question how do you clear the codes i cant find anything on it in the manual...
and since i have had the bike this is about the 10th tank of gas so i dont think it is a gas issue but i agree with the heat issue because it seems like it only happends when bike has ran for a while.

Can i ask why do you think it could be the battery? i think it is still the stock one and i have tested it and the voltage is still correct on it.
Thanks for all the feedback guys anything helps.
Brad

If its cranking over good, i doubt very seriously its the battery. If you got a code 21 for the Crankshaft position sensor, then thats where I would look. What do you mean your dealer can't find one, they too dumb to find it on the microfiche or are they saying its no longer available.

I think the crank position sensor is in this drawing, item 59026.

Well, I would check everything else I or anyone else could think of that might cause the problem before I bought the part. That is unless you're in a hurry and want to gamble that's it. Granted it's reporting a crank sensor error but who's to say that's not being caused by the crank position signal being interrupted or maybe that's the only error the ECU can report (engine stops, crank not turning, crank position error).

Try to eliminate anything that might intermittently fail and cause the problem - clutch switch, kickstand switch, kill switch, fuel pump, battery connections, check the electrical connectors in general. Maybe the connection from the crank sensor is loose or corroded. Don't eliminate the battery completely. I've seen batteries that would crank the engine but just didn't have enough to cause a good spark. I don't know if it's possible to vapor lock the gas tank on the 12 but next time it happens try opening the gas cap. If you hear a hiss of air the tank has a vacuum for some reason.

Hope this helps. I'm sure others will have more suggestions. Good luck.

P.S. I did have this sensor fail on a KTM one time but it was not intermittent. Good one minute, bad the next.

Have you tried to boost it?
Maybe ride it near the house until it dies then try to boost it.
If it boost then probably the battery. Use a battery to boost not a charger.
My R1 would not boost from a charger, only battery or battery pack.
Also check the gap in the crank sensor. Too much gap will cause a no start condition.
Don't know what it should be but I've had luck by bending it to close the gap a little.

The test for a crank sensor is a resistance check and the best time to do that is when its hot as it is more likely to show up any problems. That being the case it sounds like your one may be failing as it happens after 10 minutes. They are not that expensive and pretty simple to change so I'd just swap it out. If its not that then you have a spare and you won't have to 'stress' your dealer buying a new part when it really fails.

Just to make sure did you clear the old codes out after fitting the new Sensor ?

If you did and its still throwing Crank Sensor Codes I'd examine the wiring and do a continuity test on the crank sensor wires between the connection and ECU whilst waggling the wires around.

Beyond that I don't know.
