voltage regulator smoking

couple night ago the rear tail lite went out and the voltage regulator started smoking, can i just eliminate the voltage regulator and hard wire it??? Is there any recalls for this issue????

what year? there was a recall for the 00. i had the recall and it still got very hot.adapters got brittle and split this is what cause fire on the 00 and 2 yrs after.i remover adapters and hard wired never had problems again.

you have to keep the voltage regulator, just get rid of the plug... oil traves up the wires to the plug from the stator and increases the resistance of the plug, causing it to get hot
