I took my bike in on the 13th of June and my bolts were found to be overtorqued. They diassemble, inspected the frame (no cracks), and reassembled the bike in 10 days at metro cycles here in Lithia Springs Georgia. Other than overflowing my coolant and returning the bike dirty, I haven't seen any other issues. The bike was running hotter than normal, for a couple of days, but I think that was due to an air bubble in the coolant system . It's been running fine since then. Additionally, as I said in my previous thread I wrote the director of public affairs a detailed letter of my concern with just replacing the collars at a lower torque value. I received a call from a Kawasaki engineering analyst and he assured me that any crack at all would be visible and there is no chance of a crack forming that is not visible, due to the weld and rigidness of the frame. My dealership has found at least 2 overtorqued frames and 2 cracked frames. The cracked frames were from bikes that did alot of drag racing. I truely think the crossmember is not strong enough to absorb the torque the 14 makes. I recently heard a story from a guy that works at a dealership that a 14 owner was riding and his frame cracked causing him to crash. He is currently working up a lawsuit for Kawasaki. Kawasaki needs to realize this is a huge issue that is not going away.

In for recall and 600mile service on Friday and picked the bike up Friday Afternoon. The call to Kawasaki USA to complain about the recall notice netted me $150 off the 600 mile service and the recall inspection found no cracks or problems. That was a relief since the bike is only a month old.

quote: Ok, so Kawasaki finally stuck their hand up and admitted the problem in late May this year. I sent mail to Kawasaki UK asking about it and received a carefully worded "no comment".
This week the UK MCN finally ran the story and Kawasaki is set to recall customers bikes. They said Kawasaki has customer safety as a priority. They could have made it a slightly higher priority in my view. Just lucky there have been no serious accidents otherwise they might wish they had.
It's still a brilliant bike though and I hope this doesn't wreck it's reputation.
Further to the above: received my letter today from Kawasaki UK, it's official now, they are recalling the UK bikes too.

Had my 14 checked by Port Angeles Power on Fri afternoon. All good to go. There is/was 12,000km on the bike. I did a very thorough check for cracks before I took it in. After that went on a blast all around the Olympic mountains on Sat. Did the full loop including a run out to Neah Bay, La Push and a good quick run across #112. Started and ended in Olympia. Tired, dirty and smiling!

*** EDITED BY ADMIN *** PERSONAL INFORMATION REMOVED ****
Below is the response I received from the letter I wrote to the National Highway and Traffic Safety:
"Hello Darryl,
Thanks for the detailed summary of your concerns with the ZX14 frame recall.
Unfortunately, the law only requires that manufacturers provide a reasonable remedy within a reasonable time. NHTSA cannot dictate what the remedy will be (unless it is completely unreasonable, i.e., telling owners to affix a sticker to their ZX14 saying "don't ride this bike over potholes"). Kawasaki's recall appears to comply with this requirement, and, as such we are currently unable to compel Kawasaki to modify step number 2. If it becomes evident that the remedy is not appropriate, Kawasaki would have to modify the remedy and re-recall the bikes.
I know you've seen it, but I'm sending a copy of Kawasaki's dealer instructions for your file.
Sorry I didn't have better news.

Darryl,
On a different topic, do you think it's appropriate for you to post a personal email to you on the internet in a public forum?

I hate to post in the middle of a 'discussion'.... Please forgive...
FYI
I had the recall done yesterday at my local dealer. (I didn't buy the bike through them... could I tell them thanks anymore than I did??!!) anyway, they are small but stated that they had done 6 or 7 recalls. They said that they have yet to find a problem... and they were checking for cracks from the get go. So, I have passed the recall... I have included my vote on the recall thread...

The bike went in for it's recall inspection this morning. Good news, all ok.
While they were doing that I borrowed the 08 14 demonstrator, first chance I have had to ride one. It's much better than the 06/07 stock bike. KInd of makes me think they should offer an ECU upgrade for the older bikes. Still not as much power as a modified bike but it's what the stocker should have been from the start.

Anyone have a copy of the actual recall inspection MC 08-12?? Had my inspection and all is OK but being a gear head kind of guy I would like a copy to reference every once in a while. Dealer told me a PDF was posted on this site but I can't locate it.
Thanks

I will keep an eye on it myself once I get it back, having them look at it at least it's documented if there is any problems down the road, I still don't see how a visual inspection can determine if there is a hair line crack????
