Red or Blue loctite on rotor bolts?

I am getting my wheels back together after polishing them. The rotor bolts had red loctite on them when I took them off. Unfortunately I stripped the head on one of the bolts trying to take it out. I now realize I should have heated the bolt first to loosen the red loctite.

My question, do you think it is safe to use blue loctite instead of red loctite on the rotor bolts? and...is there any special procedure to be aware of if I use the red loctite?

Thanks guys. Appreciate your help.

I thought red was only for studs and other non-removable items.

Well, at least the color was red.

Use whatever the book says, I would look it up for you, but my book is in Conway, AR, and I am in Jackson, MS right now..........

Blue is not permanent, that is, to be used on stuff you plan on taking apart. Red is permanent but obviously you can take it apart. It is tough, though. The green is "sleeve lock" and fills a greater gap than is present in a threaded fastener. It's real tough.

But what does the book say? I know the rotors, and the kickstand bolts had a red thread locker,.........

was it red lock tite?

Only time I have ever seen green used, was in the bearing support on a lock up, out in the cover on a zx12.........

I use the blue loctite.I believe the red thread locker on the bolts is not loctite from the factory and is deceiving.

The color of the product is not a good guidline. For example, honda threadlocker in medium strength is red.

That being said, medium strength is what you need. Not the heavy duty removal product.

•Install the air valve cap. •Install the brake disc(s) so that the disc rotation mark
aligns with the tire rotation.
Apply a non-permanent locking agent, and tighten the
brake disc bolts.
Torque - Brake Disc Bolts: 27 N·m (2.8 kgf·m, 20 ft·lb)

Taken from Zx12 B series manual

yep, "non-permanent" locking agent............

The factory bolt I got from Ron Ayers has a thick red covering that looks and feels almost like silicone gasket goo only less rubbery.

The Loctite website says red is for high temp applications. Permatex threadlocker has 4 grades of red, one of which is high temp, one is permanent, one is high strength, and one is large diameter.

I guess if I use the blue and check the torque after 500 miles I'll know if it is working.

Thanks for the quick response! This site ROCKS! I need to buy some Bikeland swag to help fund it.

+1 on using the correct metric allen. Otherwise you'll mess up the sockets.
