It can absolutley be done. I rode one. "Impressive" on the board (either here or on zx12r.org) has done it out in MD. He used the 10R forks and swinger though. Handled better than stock IMO...lighter components no doubt helped.
If you are just looking for an inexpensive "lightweight wheel" upgrade, seems like used Magnesium wheels would be the way to go from a "bang for the buck" standpoint. I've seen a few including ones I sold go for just over $1000.
