newbie ZX12 rider.........800 miles and having problems HELP!!
I'm starting to miss dirt bikes......they are simple.
I just bought a 2000 ZX12, it had 2200 miles when I bought it, and now has 2900. I was wondering if anyone has had this same type of problem.
Start it up, it's real lopey- just like it has been since I've owned it. I blip the throttle, jumps to 4,000 rpm, comes back down and immediately dies. THEN it wont start, won't turn the starter over. Shut off the key, and turn it back on- speedo and tack bury the needle and come back. City light/3rd light is lit, hit the starter, nothing. So then I push started it, 3rd gear from 10 mph it fires and dies. The headlights are now on, so I hit the starter, and it cranked and fired up. Drove around for 5 minutes, acted normal. Came back to the garage- it's idleing blip the throttle and let it come back. it dies and the same crap. won't start. Waited 3 minutes after cycling the key on and off and finally one of the times it cranked over. AAAARRGGHHH!!!
I love this bike, power is kickazz, but if this type of stuff is going to keep up, I'm gonna hafta sell. Can't afford to have something I can't depend on. It seems like most of you guys are getting well over 15,000 miles on these things w/ no problems.
Is a 2000 a bad year to buy? Would a dynojet power commander help smooth out the rough idle?

Nothing wrong w/ a 2000
You need to post more info about how the bike is set up. What mods have been done and does it have an aftermarket exhaust like a Muzzy or Acro. Have the factory recalls been done. High altitude ECU, gas gauge etc. I have a 2000 as many of the guys on this board and they are very dependable.
First things to check that are easy are the battery cable/solenoid/ground connections. Take the battery tray/start relay out and go over all the connections to make sure they are all tight and that there is a good ground. Remember this whole bike is electronic its not a dirt bike so if your battery is low and the ground connections are bad you could have any one or all of the symptoms you describe.
If you have a loping idle and an aftermarket exhaust that's a whole different storey. Get a Power Commander 3r. I have a full Muzzy with a PC3R and have a steady idle at 8-900 rpm (just a hint of a lope) It takes a little work to get the fuel right.
If you don't want to fiddle put the stock can on and enjoy the power the way it comes. I think the stock bikes are pretty bullet proof if you look after them. I have a KTM LC4 Supermoto, I think its much more fragile than my 12 and it's heritage is fom the dirt.

Just thought of another quick test. Disconnect the battery for 15-20 minutes. This will reset the EMS. Do this after you check all your battery/ground connections. (EMS - Engine Management System - The ECU or brain of the bike)

Is the FI light coming on during any of this?

I would put an Interstate Battery in there that should solve most of your problems, then get the PCIII or R, and make sure you have a good Muzzy map in there. almost sounds like your idle is to low so when you rope the throttle and let off, your coming down to low and killing the engine. also the Muzzy Ignition advancer smoothed my bike out. what kind of gas is in there?? did you get some crap in your tank? the light thing is not a big deal that is how they work.

I had a major problem with my 2000 ZX-12R untill I had the Hight Alt. ECU. The damn bike would not idle. The new ECU and a custom map helped. Oh ya also I live at 4900 feet alt.

thanks everyone
It must have been the jackass at the dealership where I bought it. I never looked the bike over with a fine tooth comb. They had the fairing installed wrong, and the problem seemed to have been a loose connection on the + side. The battery read 12.2 volts, so I threw the charger on it. Between tightening and charging it seemed to come out of it.
I hope this is the last problem I have for a long time.

Interstate Battery??? YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!
I changed out my OEM for an interstate and immediately the 3500-4000rpm stumble went away, my mileage went from 22-25 to 45-50mpg and it dynoed at 194hp SAE!!!!!
