first servicing on zx12 ???????
ok i've always known it to be the case that i take a new bike in around 500 miles for servicing, the zx12 manual says nothing about service until 1000 miles? should i do the 4000 rmp limit til 500 then the 6000 rpm limit till 1000 and then bring it in? also i noticed the the zx9 has a 600 mile initial servicing. im confused

IMHO the 1st servicing is a COMPLETE waste of money if you have even 1 iota of mechanical ability or have a friend with same. change oil & filter, check chain and other nutz & boltz, no real "work" on it at all. Do the oil change and keep the receipts.

my question is not whether i should do it myself of not. i'm asking at what mileage should the work be done? 500? 600? 1000?

I don't have my manual with me, but I seem to remember that my 2000 model called for a 600 mile service. That's when I had mine done at least. It's cheap insurance just in case.

When in doubt, and in the absence of compelling evidence otherwise, follow the manual.
As to whether you should do it yourself, only you can answer that. There is nothing tricky about the first service, mostly you are looking for problems. If you do not feel competant to do it, well......

Jason, I would change the oil and filter at around 500 miles. There is the possibility of small bits of metal being left over from the manufacturing process as well as from the new parts wearing in. Check the oil after you drain it for these and open up the oil filter and do the same. Don't leave the "break in" oil in there too long. It isn't some special oil or anything, but needs to come out for the above reasons.

My manual say the first oil change is 600 miles.

600 miles it is, page 60 clearly states a 600 mile initial servicing.
