Anybody ever change their thermostat......
With the motor still in the frame?
Looks pretty tight & crowded in there and I'm trying to decide whether to just drop the motor out again for the swap unless it's easier than it looks in the frame.
Thanks,
Dan

yep,
twice, once with the engine in, once with the engine out. I wouldn't drop the engine just to do the thermostat but if I was dropping the engine then I would definitely change the thremostat . Unfortunately one of the bolt heads for the thermostat block sheared off as I was undoing it, which they have a tendency to do, so if that happens you'll have to take the engine out.
I remember it as being a complete pig of a job with the engine in. I didn't remove the TB's (apart from letting in more light to see what your doing I can't see how that helps off the top of my head). Getting the fuel hoses out of the way is probably a good idea ,though I didn't do it at the time. Biggest problem I had was getting the thermostat to stay seated while you struggle to bolt the housing block back on. There maybe a technique but I ended up holding it in place with some silicon sealent.
(Replace the rubber o-ring as well, mine was well knackered).

taking the TB's off takes 20min and makes the job a WHOLE LOT EASIER. Gives you room to get yr hands in there, and see what you are doing.
After I replaced thermostat, I tested the supposedly defective one on the stove in a pot of water & thermometer and it was fine... grrrrr

Anyone find that the thermostat was actually the problem?

I usually lower the motor with the bottom mounting bolt still in place.Radiator even stays attached to the front upper and pivots with the motor.Don't forget the muffler bolt.
