Where oh where did my MPG go?

I just installed my Akro and K&N air filters and I would guess I lost 1/3 of my miles per gallon. The bike is running great and I'm not riding it any harder than I did before.

What gives, my inquiring mind wants to know?

Thanks,
Pat

Umm...More air + more fuel = more horsepower = less mileage.

I need a bigger fuel tank.

I would have thought because the engine is running more efficiently that it would at least stay the same. I lost at least 1/3 of the MPG and didn't pick up 1/3 more horsepower.

Are you using the stock map for the PCIII?

25 -30 mpg for me. mmm 170+ rwhp from 1200cc - probably not going to be too efficient on gas. However I know what you mean so just keep hitting it!!

I'm not running my PCIIIr yet.

The bike is running so good right now I doubt I'll install it. I work with computers all day and don't really want to have to mess with one if I don't have to with my motorcycle. I think I would like to wait until I find a shop with a dyno and exhaust gas analyzer around the Cincinnati area to get a custom map created if I bother with it at all. The PCIIIr will probably just gather dust on my workbench if my bike keeps running as good as it does now.

You may find that if you put the bike on a sniffer it's too rich in some areas. A lot of the areas on a power commander map lean out the mixture to compensate for the pipe.

to be honest

If you thijnk its running good now get the PCIIIR, even just the stock map for Akro's on K&N's site and hanks timing map make a world of difference.

I've got a PCIIIr, it came in a package deal from Spencer Cycle.

Got the pipe, the K&N's, and the PCIIIr for a great price on the package deal.

Maybe I'll mess with it after all.

I have the Akro and PCIII. When I installed the pipe and map that came with the unit. It had a surge at 3-4000rpm so I knew it was running rich. I rode it for a few days before I had it dyno tuned....."Gas Hog" for sure. At the dyno shop, I found that it was running rich all the way through. MPG and HP improved after the dyno tune!

I'm getting low 30s with a 1270 motor, Muzzy pipe, K&Ns, cams advanced. The bike's making 195hp, 106lb/ft of torque, so it is just a case of efficiency. Course, the bike was making *high* 30s before I started, so sometimes I miss that 160-170 mile tank range, but everytime I get all misty eyed about it, I just whack it.
