What do you guys think????
Im going to mount my new GPS, I have a 2000 so a stemstand cant be used. I was going to use mount a ram mount ball on the top clamp. I was thinking about drilling a 1/4 20 tapped hole and mounting it where the red dot is. I was kinda wondering about stress in that part. I cant see a 1/4 hole doing a lot to that. Option 2 is having a boss tig welded on the clamp and re powder coat the thing. What do you guys think??

Personally, I wouldn't do it.
I'm pretty conservative about things like this, rear tires, chains, etc..
I went out and checked mine out to get a reference and I think it's not a gamble I'd be willing to take.
My gut feeling is I think it would probably be fine, but I wouldn't risk it on such a critical piece of hardware.
Edit: Also, I have a Techmount (very nice unit) that mounts to the fairing stay/mirror bolts. You may want to look into that.

thats a good question ???
welding would also "stress" the part but which is worse ???
i would go for the tapping idea BUT unthread the thing and check for stress cracking or ripping after several good rides.
i really doubt your going to get a catastrophic failure.my experiance with aluminum ambulnace bodies is that it will more than likely start cracking if it even does anything at all

big mike, I have a MPS kill teather on the left clip on. So thats out of the question

Blitz, I was wondering how critical this piece is when there are custom billet ones that look so fragile This one below is for a Busa.

the difference between billet ( as in the picture ) and cast ( as in the stock ninja clamp ) is similar to the difference between canadian beer and american beer

Don't know about the American beer vs. Canadian beer comparison, but if I was going to drill a critical component, I'd want it to be billet.

Well, Blitz is a little more conservitive than I would be here. I don't think drilling and tapping a hole there will cause any problems. Billet is always better without doubt as Blitz pointed out. I don't think however 1 small hole will be an issue. I wouldn't put all those pockets like that other one has in the stock unit.

I'd spend some time talking to the people at techmount (www.techmounts.com) before you go and reinvent the wheel
