One more clutch install question
OK....I have been looking through all the "archives" for info on my muzzy clutch install next week. I still have a few questions I couldn't find answers to.
I need to buy a Impact gun so.....how many ft/lbs is that big clutch nut gonna take to come off? Will a 200-230 ft/lb impact gun do the trick....or do I need to go with the 400 ft/lb?
I was told I do not need a "clutch holding tool" to take this nut off (just a little boot or hand pressure to hold the assy in place)...is this correct? Also...Do I need to torque that nut down to a certain spec or just use the torque wrench and wrap it a few times? (I know I need to torque the springs to 78 inch lbs)
That should be it......thanks for the help!

i guess you wouldn't need clutch tool when using impact wrench. a word of caution though, ive seen a LOT of galled threads from use of impact wrench. especially on 'precision' machined parts. quick & easy does have its risks....
also if bike is in gear and friend there to help hold it in place you can probably break it free that way as well.
i broke my clutch boss trying to get mine without paying for tool, sucked a big one, one month backorder....tool got here quicker than the new piece..hehe

Damn near any impact wrench will spin it off. Don't need a special tool to hold it for that. I personally would not put the thing back together with the impact wrench. In fact I feel pretty strongly that doing it with the impact wrench is bad practice. Torque wrenches are not too expensive considering the peace of mind they give you.

12RPILOT,
OK....maybe I am missing something but how will I torque that nut down without a tool to hold the clutch in place? (I know the impact gun will work because of the fast "wrapping" action)but can you actually hold the clutch assy while torqing down that nut? Oh...and about how much torque then?
Torque wrenches scare me too but that is how it "appears" Doug@spencer did it.
IFLYGUNS,
I checked that out when you sent me there before.....Great info and I appreciate it but.........I can not see anywhere in there where it shows or says how he put that "Nut" back on (Impact gun or Torque wrench? & how much torque)...that is why I re-posted for these questions.
Thanks for the info so far!

100# on clutch hub nut. I bought the Kwak tool which holds the hub a year ago and really am glad I did since I have had the entire assembly in/out several times, and don't like using an impact on it.
Thr latest experiment is that I had a machinist take .020" off the hub height so that the hat has a little more room before bottoming out.. This'll prolly work about as well as my other experiments but, hey why noy try?
