painting lower fork legs

so i understand painting aliminium is a problem because paint generally doesnt stick, but are the lower fork legs (no, not the polished tube) bare aluminium or is it painted from the factory? it looks liek it is painted to me. any painters here can give me tips as to how to do a good job? worried about it chipping easily given how exposed it is. wanted to powdercoat originally but no time.

If you want Black or a very few other colors, try the Caliper / Disc Paint they have made by VHT. It is chip resistant and scratch resistant and no base coat. Used it on my whells and still nice not to mention the brake cleaner cannot do much to it!

Sprayed it right out of the can on to the wheels and other parts! When I was finished, I took some Brake cleaner to handle the overspray and all I did was barely clean up some places. You cannot even see where I levered the tires onto the rims! What sanding I just sprayed lightly the first coat and heavier the 2nd coat and finished it the 3rd coat! DONE!!

I am doing my wheels right now with the VHT Gloss Black.
The only prep I did was going over the surface with a scotch brite pad,
and then I just cleaned all the residue off.
I've got the rear done, and the caliper, and it looks great.
Need to do the front now, but I am still trying to decide whether to do the front calipers
and center ( gold portion ) of the rotors????

Has anyone painted these parts with success???

calipers and front rotors would probably be a real pain in the ass..... i did my calipers and i couldnt really get inside them too well, so you could still see the original gold color. i ended up chroming my new stuff. i wouldnt touch rotors, maybe polish the centers if possible, looks a bit tricky to paint.

Mark I painted the OE rotors on my 12 with VHT and it did OK. They're a real PITA to tape up around those huge rivets without Gold showing thru. The only problem is where you bolt them on the wheel. The bolt head tends to twist the shit off. The surface is very slick and really needs glass beading to properly prep it.

Thanks for the tips
I may try to finish it up this weekend. It took longer than expected on the rear,
read as a few hours. So I wanted to make sure I had ample time for the front.
Like frEEk says, it sucks getting rushed.
So I am riding around with a black rear wheel and a gold front, GAWD

I just got finished running a spare black rear with the gold front. Still had good rubber on it, so wtf. I like the black wheels with the PMB...maybe doin' that sometime soon.

Thanks for the ideas. I wasn't sure what to do with the calipers and the rotors. I think I will paint them. They are the only things remaining that are gold colored.

fork legs are painted (as is everything else). hope it holds up well, the engine enamel i used on the gold engine covers didnt do too well. cips off easy. maybe i should have primered it (i usually do). bloody idiot. hope the bits with caliper paint do well (calipers, fork kegs, rear wheel).

thx again for the responses.
