Pulling down motor, need manual!
I've decided to pull the heads off my 12 and get the valve guides and valve guide seals replaced, possibly the piston rings, but I need a manual, is there anyone here looking to sell theirs? The engine burns oil on start-up, just a quick puff of smoke on initial start-up and clears right up. Doesn't do it again until it sits for awhile(possible oil draining into combustion chamber from valves?).
I think I remember someone pulling the head off thier 12 without pulling the engine out the bike, doesn't seem impossible as long as there's enough clearance under the frame. Anything in particular to look out for? Is it possible to check the valve clearance with the head out? I have experience with pulling car motors and wrenching on them and I'm looking forward to learning the insides of the 12's motor.

More than likely you will see the oil coming from the air port in the exhaust port.
Look into all 4 of the exhaust ports and you will see one or two or all of them wet with carbon/oil. When you look closer you will see that its actually coming from the air ports and not the guides. some or all ov your valves that have this oil leakage will be crusted up. This hurts exhaust flow bigtime. If you have blocked off the air system for the exhaust system as most have, this creates a slight suction and draws in oil past the seals between the head and valve cover. Remove the blockoff plates and you will most likely see oil in there. This is why its important to replace the "sparkplug" hole gaskets for the valve cover. Thats your source of oil in the exhaust and your smoking.
Even if you have new gaskets and are using the blockoff plates, you should either tap the head passages and plug them or clean the passageway from the valve cover side and inject hightemp silicone sealer inthere. This will stop the oil for good. I went thru this as have several other members on here. I just cleaned the passage way real good with paint thinner so the steel tube insert was squeeky clean and filled the top 1" or so with silicone.
