1290 motor damaged need some advice
I finally got to find out whats wrong with my 1290 after running the strip and the clutch basket blowing up. The rods are damaged and the pistons are galled. I was lucky as the crank turned out to be ok and the cylinders are ok too. . the head is done by carpenter as well as his cams.
Would you fellas just patch it back up with stock rods or should i spring for the nicer ones crower or carillos?
What about doing a 1394 kit? It comes with new pistons, rods and crank.
If i run the 1394 will i have to run a secondary battery? I have a dry nos kit on the bike and the trunk is full of pc,nos bottle and msd box.
Will the 1394 kit be reliable? I would have never considered the stroker kit before but since its costing alot of money to patch my 1290 the 1394 becomes a viable option.
if i get the 1394 kit, what else will have to be done to the motor to get set up right.
Last but not least my zx12 will not really be a daily rider bike anymore. I bought a new zx14 for the daily stuff!
thanks in advance

i am Not familiar with either motor
the one you leaned on or the one you want to build
i would like to hear the rest of the story......not a confessional
but just the rest of the story
what you think contributed to your twisted engine
what you reasonably expect out of the new one
no less how you expect to dodge that bullet the next time
a new stroker engine & combination youve never run b4
will put you squarely on the bulls eye
one last question
were the rods twisted ????

Rebuild it using stock rods, skip the stroker save your money. Step up the pills. A nitrous jet cost $2 and will make up the difference. Take my advice, I have both a stroker and a 1290, both done by Lee's. The only difference is one cost a shitload more than the other, both make similar power and run similar numbers. If you want to go faster, step up the pills, end of story, put your stroker money elsewhere.
My 1290 is capable of a touch under 300rwhp on a simple twin nozzle dry kit, stock cams, stock rods. I used stock rods on my stroker as well, no problems. Similar numbers only a touch more torque N/A.

RAC4IT summed it up nicely. Two much money to spend for crank and to clearance
stuff, plus a lot of down time. In a few years ya just might sell that 1290 and make
that 14 your drag bike.

any advantage of having my stock crank lightened and balanced? How about ceramic transmission bearings? If i keep the 1290 i'm looking to sneek up the power a little. also the motor has 13.1 pistons but i assume carpenter milled the head for more comp. Maybe 13.5 to 1 pistons??
Flightleader my 1290 was built by carpenter racing. I still had the stock clutch basket before it sent chunks everywhere. It made 193.4 hp on a dynojet 250 and 96 ft lb's torque.
ps: thanks for the suggestions!!

I agree with Bergie, sounds like you just need new stock rods new (JE?) pistons and a new billet basket.
Not too bad, it could have been worse...

I didn't really want to spend any money at all but............ oops on my part by not installing a billet basket.
I appreciate the advise from all you guys and decided to go with your advice given. I called my mechanic and am having him redue my 1290. Bergie were did you get your nos specific pistons? I'm going to run the ceramic tranny bearing and VIncent Hills od gears as well.
thanks

i agree with rac4it
i would not have voted for the stroker
simply because it would be uncarted territory for you
carpenter builds a good engine
he might have skimmed you head to flattened it
but know you were goin to spray.....probably not
unless you requested it
reading you engine after a tear down
you will no doubt replace you rods
still i ask again......were you old rods twisted......????
check them out carefully
reason being sometimes when spraying
the charge inside the cylinder is very lopsided
resulting in the rod twisting......while its also going up & down
the twisting could be why you walls & or pistons were galling
look at the block like it is installed in the bike & note where in each cylinder
where the worse damage is
1 oclock front.........9 oclock side
for each cylinder...................maybe you will find the rods were twisting
maybe
no less on disassmbly always number the parts per cylinder
even the valves
you always want to know Where they came from
if things start to trend/pattern will save you much trouble
& maybe a grenade later
1 other thing
sounds like you have been doing some racing for a while
while you have you bike down
check the left side swing arm bearing(ck both)
it really takes a hammering from launches
torque is multiplied thru your trans & that left swingarm pivot takes a hell
of a beating.......like being Whacked with a hammer
good luck

Them OD gears Mr. Hill has, sure are nice, and shiney too. He might have
some of them perty bear stacks hanging around to compliment your bikes
color. How much juice are ya spraying? JE's shelf 86mm pistons should be
able to handle most of your dry nos needs, But if ya want to spring for the fatty
tops I am sure Noonan would be more than happy to sell ya some.
Dang, for not wanting to spend too much your looking at close to 2.5k already
with out build cost.

I've gone thru a bottle and 1/2 of nos and thats it. I live at a mile high location and was always running a flat 10 and once in while dropping a high 9. This was without nos of course. I also weigh in at a skinny 230 suited up.
Your right about not wanting to spend much money. I did order the ceramic tranny bearing and a nos progressive controller, add this with the other stuff rods, pistons, bearing etc. and it becomes a rebuild. Oh ya through in a new clutch, billet basket and install od gears. Hmmmm the bottom line is close to 4k and that was the only reason i thought of a stroker.
The rods are not twisted but the rod bearings were showing visible galling. I don't think i had enough runs on the juice but you never know.
