Bathroom tiling question
building two small bathrooms /w tub in the house.. I'm going to be tiling the bathtub areas and up the walls. I've finished everything in greenboard.... we're moving and chances are good someone will smash the house down within the next 5-10 years(maybe even sooner) so I'm not putting concrete backer board over the greenboard..it would just be a waste of money.
QUestion is this... I'll be finished mudding/sanding by tonite and I want to get a coat of primer on the walls asap to help get a handle on all the dust so we can start to get back to normal living here... do I prime the greenboard in the bathub area where I am going to tile? Will the tile still adhere to a surface that's been primed? just wondering if I need to leave the areas that will be tiled as clean greenboard or take the extra time to prime them to give them some more strength etc.
-cheers.

fish, pm Otis and see what he says. I've seen some of his tile work. For a stupid bastard he does some excellent work.
Seriously, he knows what he's doing when it comes to that stuff.

Paint the greenboard with PVA thinned down with water .Waterproofs and primes all in one
Or leave it as it is and stick some NINJA decals over it !!

So under the assumption that the people who buy your house are going to tear in down, your going to be a cheapskate and not put up backerboard? You know you can use the new Wonderboard instead of the cement board and easily cut it with a utility knife and it costs all of $5 for a 3'x5' sheet.
That being said, if you insist on tiling over greenboard in a bathroom use the PVA or Kilz2 but don't thin it with water. If you use Mastic instead of mortar the tiles will stick to it just fine.

Even with the supreme optics of the "Gadget Goggles", I wouldn't trust his opinion.
