Physics Part 13 - Structural Dynamic Loads on Wind Turbines

This is probably a long shot, but I was curious if anyone had any experience (either theoretical or practical) about analysis of dynamic wind loads on wind turbines (specifically for wind-power generation).

Should the frontal projected wind area be taken as the stationary projected blade area, or does the fact that the blades rotate increase or decrease loading?

Also, since the blades rotating cause centripedal forces, are they generally large enough to cause 2nd order deflection/bending at the tower mast base?

Is there any way this can be used/related to motorcycles? Perhaps in the future?

the towers do move, our foundations are 32ft deep, with 262 foot hub height. We get about .3 inch deflections with worst-case loading (emergency stop from full speed) at the foundation.

not sure the loading issues, you can watch the flex-mounted gearbox assembly move while in there. I will try to dig up some more in-depth info. I am sure there are studies that adress this very question. Just a matter of finding them.

sitting up top you are looking at about a 3 foot swing of the nacelle itself in rough wind.

This video taken from outside during said overspeed test

This video was taken by camera set on the floor at the base. It is pointed straight up and gives a good idea of the flex of these towers.

as i find more i'll post it

Sorry Fish. Slug is the best guy to try to answer this. I know little to nothing about wind turbines that are used for power generation. You were close however. I work with Ram Air Turbines.

These guys.

Here is a picture of one mounted in one of our wind tunnel's ready to be tested. It's not a great picture but it's the only one I could find on the interweb. I have some more at work. However I am not going back there until after the first of the year.
