OT: Wind turbine stuff for those asking
Construction stuff:

The above show a pretty good sample of hte construction photos for a turbine. Each turbine needed 8 picks to assemble. The last turbine assembled they accomplished 6 picks in one day.
The parts were all trucked in, the blades being the hardest part due to t heir length. The trailer was specially made to allow the rear wheels to steer remotely. The pickup truck in the photo right behind hte blade trailer controls the back wheels.
Any specific questions?
Some wildlife also lives up here: http://s1ug.org/wind/bmec_copperhead_001.jpg
We also have another site in Montana that i was helping with in October.
This page is MUCh better layout, and i will be getting the Buffalo Mountain stuff done better soon.

Slug, do they have the ablility to feather the "props" if they want to stop the blades on a
windy day? And, are they fixed in the direction that they point, or can they swivel to face
the wind all the time? I noticed that the vanes are hollow... what are they made of?
Awesome stuff... real interesting!!!! I'm sending a bunch of the pics to some other friends..

Cool pics!
Looks like the same type of wind turbine generator that fell off a trailer in an underpass in Portland, Oregon a few months back. I had to drive around it for about a week on my way to work. It was so heavy, they couldn't pick it up inside the underpass, so they finally skidded it out.

the turbines i work on are variable pitch turbines, so they adjust blade pitch to adjust speed. The generators are quasi-constant speed, but allow up to 10% slip and still maintain proper frequency output.
they track the wind, so whatever direction it is pointed the nacelle will turn and match that.
The blades are all fiberglass on these machines. Some of the 3MW machines actually use carbon fiber (talk about $$$$$$)

Beautiful pictures! Especially the JUDITHGAP pictures! WOW :O Gorgeous!
Those things really make landscapes look good.
How long you been messing with those slug? You design or you the labor guy putting it together and maintenance?
You ever get freaked out being up there sometimes? That is "up there". What kind of safety do you use?
Anyways, nice pictures! You got a VERY AWESOME career my friend.

not really, up there is a wahtever deal. we have fullclimbing harness with ascender, and safety cable down center of the ladder. Fall prevention lanyards while on top, so you would have to be stupid to fall off

Trust me, if there was a way... I'd fall off... I'm a pilot, and before every flight, I gotta
go puke... height scares the shit out of me...

Slug I'd like to buy you a drink if I could and make fun of people while we drink.
Cuz, you have GOT to have ONE of the most interesting jobs. And I admire how you're not scared of heights. That IS my biggest phobia of all time! I literally would turn white as a ghost and faint like a little bitch...hahahaha I always get so pissed at myself that I can't explore the worlds sites in that way as many get to as you do.

Are all the ones at Judith Gap 3MW? It looks like there must be at least 30 of 'em there! Would that mean that they are regularly putting out close to 100MW almost constantly or is the "average" constant output lower?

Where is "JUDITH GAP"?? I wanna rip top speed down that road and get a yamaha raptor 700 and rip through that land when I'm done with the road.

Judith gap is in montana, about 2 hours from billings
yes, pee out the hatch. there's a reason the trucks get parked away from and upwind of the turbines
The judith ones are 1.5MW, total of 90 on that site. 135MW peak output. No idea yet the average output, because some days of construction were totally calm, and others would take your hat off if youdidn't strap it on tight enough.
theones on buffalo mountain (visible from knoxville on a clear day) are 1.8 each, but we only have 15 of them.
the 3MW ones are too new. Just like the first model year of a car or bike, I wouldn't recommend buying any of them for AT LEAST another 2 years of development. The V47 is an old design(660kw), and looks like it'll run thorugh just about anything. Ours are v80 and are much newer, and still have some control issues.

Curious as to how far down the base is and how they anchor it to the ground?

ours are 32ft deep, about 1 foot diameter wider than the tower itself
the judith gap ones are 6ft deep, but spread 30ft wide
