Check all the obvious stuff, it should'nt be TOO hot. If you mean the gauge stays on 3/4 when in town for awhile, it's normal. As long as the fan is cycling to keep it there. Oh, you have it switched... just leave it on when in town. 12's aren't the coolest running bikes totally stock, especially when actin' up in town all day. What exactly do you mean by TOO hot?

REally chronic overheating is often an airlock in the system. Make sure you bleed it properly.

I can't believe no one mentioned the most common cause of chronic overheating....
Small hole in the head gasket lets superheated exhaust enter the cooling system and
superheats the water.

All it takes is a tiny pinhole.

To test, remove each spark plug, remove radiator cap... add air pressure to each cylinder
and see if you get air bubbles out of the radiator.

That will be $50...

There are a few causes for sure, as 238 points out. Hope it's not as serious as that, and maybe just some air in the system.

If you do not find air in your cooling system, re-evaluate your air / fuel ratio. My 1270 likes to run from 12.6 - 12.9:1.

Lean idling / running engines tend to run hot.

Psycho made a good point... that why I run egt sensors in each cylinder... I can see what's
happening throughout the RPMs and at cruise...

After making sure all of the air is removed, go up 2 bars on the 1st button on the Power Commander. That will add 4% more fuel. If that resolved the problem, then change the map for 0, 2% and 5% throttle to 4 to 5% more fuel up to 3 to 4,000 RPM then adjust from there.
