Just brought a Honda
Just brought a Honda Civic 2002 V-tech manual.
Very happy for it, I had 6 years of pain with a Skoda, no AC just 45 HP.
This thing is so nice to drive.

I've got an 05 Civic SI and I like it fine.. It's not broken in yet but the gas mileage sucks.. Less than 25MPG in town.. Hope it gets better.. The 06 is gonna be a coupe with a 6 speed and 197 HP.. My son has a 99 SI and he loves it..

Open up the exhaust and install a cold air intake for about a 10% improvement..

I was told that the cold air system is not worth it, just buy a K and N filter I was told by a mechanic.
Also that if I whanted improvment to go full exaust.

Marcos, a car is like any other motor.....have to open up the restrictions....if ya want more power then you have to move more air....if you open up the exhaust, and more air can get out, you need to let more in.....Depending on how far you go with mods on the car, I would agree with your mechanic.....but if you start messing with heads and valves, or cams...then I woudl say go with the cold air intake...
I run an Airaid cold air with 2 1/4 inch exhaust with flowmasters on my truck, I also reprogrammed the computer for shift points and timing. I run a 160 Hypertech thermostat to help keep things cool, and a Grantelli mass air flow sensor...the truck has 140, 000 miles on it and is still putting almost 300 HP to the ground....the intake i did last, as i was told I wouldnt need it...turned out I did......badly.....

I ordered a short ram intake and some strut bars, here in DR Im taking the cat out, and putting a straight 2.5" tube from the headers to the mufler.

Just make sure you don't make it sound like a fart. Nothing worse than hearing an econo car leaving the light with fart cans...
ppppprrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat...2nd gear....
ppppprrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat...3rd....
ppppprrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat....4th...
ppppprrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..............5th gear in only 26 seconds and some disgusted pedestrians.

Just be careful with the after market upgrades. Alot of those after market upgrades void certain warranties. i have been working with Honda motor company since 1992, they are getting tight with their warranty claims. Its a good vehicle, Honda makes a good product, but i have to agree, dont install a bean can exhaust. One more thing, if you want the most performance out of that Civic, you can install a V-TEC controller.

The easiest way to describe a v-tec control is like, installing a power commander on your bike.VTEC means variable timing electronic control system, basically it controls the valve duration and lift during engine operation, at low speed valves open less so it helps create better fuel economy and you get more torque, at higher rpms the valves have more lift and duration for maximum horse power. Its like also having two cam shafts on one valve train, it locks the valves all together. Its kinda like adjusting your timing as you drive for less or more torque. That vtec controller allows you to set your parameters for more or les duration and lift. It hooks up directly to your ECUand you get a display panel that reads your outputs.
