ZX12R Rear wheel question

My buddy got this complete wheel with a Shinko that had a bearing go out on the sprocket carrier. Froze after a 75 mile trip. It melted a little on the swing arm extensions.

Well, we repaired the extensions and put all new bearings and seals through out the wheel and sprocket carrier. One thing I noticed is that the wheel spacer that is inside the wheel is very loose or has a lot of movement up and down. Sloppy might be a better word. Never got to see it before the intial install. Now on his 2002 ZX121R the spacer in that wheel is not sloppy.

Can this be a problem? Is it possible with all the heat generated that the wheel may have expanded slighlty in the wheel? As the axle only rides on the bearings and the spacer is in place once the axle is tightened down. I don't see it contributing to any problems. The wheel spins fine(which it better, now that is has new bearings) balances fine with no binding. We don't experience any left to right movements once the axle is tightened.

Here is the next problem. Related actually. After the wheel was refurbed, we ran the wheel once at the drags and had noticed a top end wobble. Only did it a few times and not too bad. Thought it might have been the road.

Then on a another day while taking a leisure trip around town at around 140mph, my friend got a violent wobble that nearly wiped him out.

So, off came the wheel. He put his original complete wheel back on and left this one in the corner of his garage.

Now tonight we were in his garage and I was curious and started looking at his wheel. So I look at it and take the sprocket carrier off and find why he was damn near road kill. The new bearing was destroyed. Lots of bearings missing and/or chewed up. Hmmm. Bad bearing from cycle shop? Highly unlikely. I then inspected the rest of the wheel and the bearings, etc look fine and rotate just fine.

Then I take another look on the inside and what do I see.....or not see? The spacer sleeve that goes between the carrier and the wheel. I assume this missing spacer would cause all of this damage?

Here is my final question. Is it safe to say that all we need to do is get a new carrier, sleeve, carrier bearings, seal and we should be alright?

Let me know ASAP. Thanks

Steve

Was the spacer that goes BETWEEN the left bearing and the sprocket carrier in place? This is often left out and the results are as you describe.

Yep. We just want to make sure that the wheel is still salvageable for safety sake. All appears ok with the other bearings, etc.

Steve,
1. leaving the cush drive spacer/bushing out not only can, but 110% certainly will cause the bearing damage you experienced.

2. do not worry about the rattling of the long spacer (between wheel bearings) when the wheel is not torqued. Some do it, some don't. As long as it isn't shortened its fine.

3. do yrself a favor and knock out the wheel bearings and get new ones when you get the new cush drive bearing. They are very cheap at yr local bearing house.
I found the hard way that they can be easily damaged by even a small chunk of trashed bearings getting in them, AND also once they are removed they should be chunked as removing them can hurt them.

do not go to Kwak for these bearings, $10 or so at any bearing house, just take em yr old ones.

Yep, what they said, a guy I used to race with did the same thing, forgot the extra spacer and almost busted his ass when it finally gave up while he was riding. It was laying in his toolbox because he forgot to put it back in last time he had the wheel off.
