Jacking front wheel up...
I need some help... I'm trying to replace my front rotors, and according to the service manual you need a special tool that goes right behind the oil filter in order to jack the front end up. I dont have a fork stand (wish I did now) and just putting a floor jack there causes the bike to want to tip to its right. Anyone know a better spot thats closer to the center of gravity, or any special tricks that dont involve $100 for a stand? The rotors just about tapped me out.

I removed my front wheel and it was pretty sturdy with a couple of jack stands. I forget where I placed them but it worked out pretty well. I believe I put one on each side of the filter somewhere. I would have used a front stand but I don't have one either

Hadn't thought of that... Ride onto something tall, insert stand and remove ramp. DUH! Thanks for the idiot check.

Run a couple tie down straps from each handle bar up to the rafters...just in case.

I made 2 boxes out of 1" plywood, one works w/ header on, other-header off. I remove both lower fairings, set thebox on floor jack, and raise 'er up. The bike balances perfect from this...both wheels off the ground.I can climb up on the bike and thrash around (gotta' pretend when it's tore down).I,ve since updated to the OFFICIAL motorcycle lift which has a large, square surface insyead of the small round one on a floor jack(don't have to have it centered just right!)

Take a look at this lift, maybe something you can build to fit your bike.

Where's the safest place to wrap a strap for lifting with a come-along / winch? Around the steering neck and handlebars looks real convienent and easy, but I've heard bad things about the reliability of the bearings. Would this place undue stress on them?

I have always just run a strap under the steering stem right behind the t-clamps and hoisted it to the ceiling with the rear on a swingarm stand. keeps it nice and stable and I havent had to remove any body panels on any bikes I have done yet which make it very quick to do fork seals too.
