Take back the AMA!

Jan. 17 - The AMA has announced the results of its recent election for the AMA Board of Directors.

Jeff Nash has been elected to represent the South Central region.

Kevin Schwantz has been elected to represent the Southeast region.

John Ulrich has been elected to represent the Southwest region.

The AMA Board of Directors consists of twelve members. Six individual Directors are elected by the general membership in their respective regions and serve three-year terms. Six corporate Directors are elected by the corporate membership and serve two-year terms. The AMA Board of Directors meets four times a year.

The three new individual Directors will be seated at the Saturday, February 16, session of the scheduled Board meeting, which will follow the election of corporate Directors at the annual Corporate Member meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Votes cast in this election were independently tabulated and the results certified by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, which also verified the ballots' eligibility.

FUCKIN' A!

I knew my vote from Region 4, District 19 for Nash was gonna COUNT! Now there's gonna be more shakin' goin' on than a 'zuk without a damper!

For those folks that didn't bother to get off their ass and mail in the simple card, SHAME ON YOU! There's an old saying about politics and not voting that goes something like... "An electorate that doesn't pay attention to the choosing of it's leaders can end up being led in unexpected ways". Below the saying is the picture of the 1927 Nuremberg Rally. I have this posted next to my computer.

Nazis and the AMA? What's the connection? Though I'm a big supporter of the AMA's lobbying and government regulation efforts and I contribute extra money to it, what they have been doing to ALL forms of motorcycle racing under their jurisdiction is nothing short of criminal.

The issues concerning the lawsuit and what they are doing with the Supercross is bad enough, but their total ignoring of the rider's safety in a race environment is unforgivable. This is the primary issues the AMA should be concerned with. Political action is VERY important, but it still take a close second place to their members' safety in a AMA sanctioned event.

The is all "news" to you (not you, swft)? Who really cares? Let me tell ya'll something... if you are not a member of AMA, don't YOU DARE tell me what a big motorcycle enthusiast you are. I don't give a shit how long you've been riding, how many bikes you have owned or how fast and far you have rode. In my eyes... YOU AIN'T FUCKIN' SHIT! I'M GOD DAMN SERIOUS!

If you REALLY gave a shit about motorcycling, you'd be a AMA member. What difference could you make? Well, 3463 MOTORCYCLISTS found the time to get off their collective asses and vote. Of that 3463, there were 2703 MOTORCYCLISTS that thought it was a time for a change. A change in how the AMA handles the events they oversee.

A change in how they deal with not only racing issues, but things like health insurance coverage pertaining to motorcycle related injuries (your policy from work might NOT cover you, but will if you crash while operating a car... DRUNK!), city regulations concerning motorcycles (like Chicago's attempted banning of bikes on Riverside Ave.) and so many other issues.

It was a LOUD demand for a change from the status quo to real reform. If you live in one of the regions that held elections this year and didn't vote, you were not part of this loud voice from the REAL motorcycling community. If you were not part of that voice, I really don't care what you'd have to say about anything motorcycle related.

It's really rather simple. You either part of the solution... or your part of the problem. WHICH ARE YOU (again, I'm not talkin' about you, swft)?

Wow! You tell 'em, Sherman! Really folks, if you are a racer, it's a love/hate relationship with the AMA. Safety concerns, mismanagement, outright lies...It's all there in black and white. The 'take back the ama' campaign has been totally successful in it's initial goals, and we can anticipate some positive changes in the upcoming year.

I met John Ulrich (he owns and operates Team Hammer, Team Emgo Suzuki, Editor of Roadracing World, father of racer Chris Ulrich) in Daytona this past October and he was talking about a lot of the issues then. A lot of the debated issues they "ran" on have been going on for quite a while but it was hidden to most members. I've been an AMA member for 17 years but really found out a lot more about the organization when I went to the Eagles session the first year it was organized. I became a Field Rep for them and then found out first hand about the things they did good and the things they did bad. My Field Rep status was pulled years back because I didn't become the traditional AMA robot/slave although I did help them out in many ways that had a great impact on the events they did in this area. To keep the status it is based ONLY on the number of memberships you produce and not the number of shows you work, dealers you service, show bike you store and transport, and other AMA members you help. Oh well their loss.

To me biggest problem to date is the lack of interest they do have in the best interest of the member base. The organization is made up of a membership that has little voice in the organization and seems to be used just to finance the organization. Although the AMA does a lot of good things and are the most organized, respected, and recognized motorcycle organization there are a lot of areas for improvement. Some of the people driving the truck didn't seem to have the directions with them and that needed to change. Splitting racing programs because of personal egos and "business" associations with people with questionable interests in promoting the AMA hurts the organization these elected officials are supposed to be helping. I think the hard lesson should have been learned during the superbike fiasco but apparently the only lesson that was learned is that when you make a stupid move, do it with other people's money.

Hopefully this will turn another corner in the AMA and they will see that the voting population does have an interest in their organization and can make a change when given an option.

If you have no idea what this thread is about, get off your ass and join the AMA. 1-800-AMA-JOIN, membership@ama-cycle.org , http://www.ama-cycle.org and tell them Rep #780 sent you (that pisses them off, hi Barbara !)

BTW - I voted for Kevin.
