More teeth for a 190 rear?
Hey guys,
As most of you know, I put a 190 rear on a few months ago - the bike LOVES the 190 for the corners, but it seems to feel like it has "less torque" now, almost like it needs more teeth in the front or rear sprocket?? What do you guys think that have 190 tires? Am I just nuts, or would it make the bike more responsive in higher gears with a tooth or two more somewhere, and where/what should I do? Please keep in mind (most of you also know this) that I am a complete mechanical boob and I have no clue what to do, so please spell it out for me (how many teeth + or - front or rear). Try going to a 55 profile in the rear. Otherwise you'll have to raise the rear abit to compensate for the smaller profile.

DP, its just changed your overall final ratio.....you will get use to it...I run a 190 M-1 on the back....aside form adding some ride heigth in the rear I didnt notice any negative traits....it feels slow now, but its really not....I dropped a tooth in the front as well...so its got lots of bottom end grunt, but does feel flat on top....but only because it gets to speed so much faster than it did before......

OH ok HDL. Thats what I'm looking for - more low end grunt. Should I remove a tooth in the rear to do that, or add a tooth to the rear?

I'd also like a bit more grunt to wheelie a bit easier  .

add to the rear or subtract from the front gets same results.
better bottom easier wheelies.
If you don't already have a 17 on the front you don't know
how nice the 12 can be.

Wait, HDL... did you say the 190/50 added ride height to your bike?
Ive got a 190/50 and a 180/55 and the 180 is a taller tire.

I think I'm gonna go with a 17 tooth in the front - what does everyone think that has the 17 tooth setup? better in the 1/4, better wheelies? Also, I'm going to get a custom map in a few weeks, will it be ok to map the bike with a 17 tooth up front?

no Steve I said after going to the 190, I needed to add heigth to the rear....IE to compensate for the shorter tire....it turns in kinda lazy now, but it feels much more stable in mid corner with the 190....I will raise the heigth on the adjustable links in the rear to get it to turn in a bit more quickly....
and I had mis written, I did not go down one in the rear, I went down one in the front......NInja12 is exactally right, if you want more grunt, go down in the front, or up in the rear....

Just remember if you run a lower gear, It = more head shake, You ever had a tank slapper, Its more likely to happen when running lower gear.
You take the rear sproket teeth and divide it by front sproket teeth and theres your ratio.
18/46 is stock and geared to high IMO
I'm running a 17/48 2:82
a 16/44 is a 2:75 a 17/46 is a 2:70
And your distance in wheelbase with sproket changes will change the bikes geometry.

Hey Outlaw- that is excellent info... what do you recommend? I have a 17 tooth front coming in, but should I go larger int he rear as well, or just leave it be?

Almost forgot - should I go get a steering damper too? Which do you guys like, Muzzy/Scotts?

2002 and newer Muzzys or Hyperpro are your only 2 options.

Hey Turbo - I've got the old 2000 model (green faster one). How do you like the bearing? The new Muzzy clutch stuff is really nice on my bike.

DP, if you have a 2000 model bike, the Scotts is the only way to go IMO....I have one on my track bike, and Roger is schemeing a way to make a mount on my 02 12 so I can use it....the only reason I dont have a steering damper on my 12 is I have been waiting for Scotts to get off their butt and make a mount, which they hae not done yet...
Try the 17 tooth sprocket before you add teeth to the rear.....I do a lot of highway riding and am thinking about going back to stock on the front. The 17 is very nice in the twisties though.....

if you have a reputable welder in your area, it can be welded on, instead of bolted....but its permanet at that point....if I am ever up that way, I will definatly take you up on that....

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think
the drilling is only 2 small holes ~ 6mm.
The holes can be welded or JbWeld if you decide to remove it.

Hadnt got to ride the bike yet since installing it.
I really like the Muzzy setup... but the extra $180 it costs over the Scotts might be hard to swalla.
Ive ordered a new piston style for my Muzzys which works similiar to the Scotts.
