Scotts Steering Damper installation....
Ok guys, I'm going to go with a 17 tooth front sproket with my 190/50 rear tire profile.... so I'm considering a steering damper. The two contenders are Muzzy's and Scotts (I can use either on my 2000 model '12). The Scotts is a bigger name in steering damper tech, and is a bit cheaper (405 bucks as apposed to almost 600 bucks) BUT it says on the scotts site that it requires... DRILLING INTO MY FRAME (shudder). How hard is this to do? I can operate a drill ok, but is there a brainless template to use to set in up correctly, or should I just go with the non-drill muzzy model?

i have used many steering dampers, and the Scotts is by far the best in my opinion.....there are quite a few guys out there that are using them on their bikes...I know Roger uses on on his 2000 12. And Lucky uses one also...as far as instalation goes, I have never done one on a 12, I put one on my 6RR..and it was straight forward. But I didnt have to drill the 6RR.....
If Roger cant fabricate me a mount for my 02 12...then I will prolly go with either the Hyperpro, or the Muzzy.....

yes you have to drill into the frame (neck) to mount the scotts.

How easy is it YCIS? I guess the real question is - is it easy to determine the exact drill location (and get to the location to drill it)?

it's easy, use a damp clotch in the airbox to catch the shavings
if you're scared, drop the extra coin and get the Muzzys, it's a bolt on and a nicer piece! no drilling!

yea..its not a terribly difficult install...unless you have large hands and or forearms. Then its a bitch to get your hand in there to place the rag and or get the shavings out. a long flexible tube attached to a shopvac is quite handy though!

If you use 5/16-18 SS capscrews you don't have to put nuts on the back side.That's what I did. Drilled and safety wired them and loctited them upon installation. You have to enlarge the holes in the scotts frame that mounts to the frame and drill and tap the frame.I blew the shavings out the front with compressed air.

I've installed two Scotts on 12s. It's a chore, but it's not THAT hard. Measure twice, punch a mark, line it up again, re-punch if necessary, drill.
I put the lock nut in a pair of vice grips and held it in the air box... or just get your lady friend to hold the nuts
