How much oil do you put in the K&N Filters?
Hey guys, as a reminder, I have a 2000 Green '12 with the generation 1 K&N filters. I'm just wondering how much oil you all put on them when you clean and change them. Last year I WAAAY over oiled the filters (they were almost dripping) and lost tons of power. This year I did 3 or so quick sprays per side per filter - is that enough? I checked the airbox today and there was a small amount of "dust" in it. The dust is not noticable to the eye, but if you run your hands around in there you can feel a small amount and pick some grains up - maybe 10 or 20 or so in your hand. Did I oil the filter enough? Just checking, I know its a judgement call, but what does everyone here with K&N's do?

Oil the guaze material is fairly straight foward. If you oil them too much... the excess will leak off and get sucked into the motor.
I suspect the reason you have grit in your airbox is because you didnt put enough grease on the sides & bottom of your filter when you reinserted it.

I greased the living hell out of them . Almost a half a tubve . The filters are very light pink now. Ithink I did it ok, but just checking with you more "pro" guys - my novice wrenching gets me into trouble all the time .

Did you use the stuff that comes in the box or some waterproof grease?

Hey Turbo - I used a BIG tube (almost 1/2 of it) of K&N filter grease. I got it at the local auto parts store. Believe me, there was so much grease, that I had to wipe down the top of the airbox after putting the filters in .

ISn't that VERY bad for the engine RAC4IT? I mean, I think the oil is there to stop particles from getting by the filter right? The filter element alone doesn't trap much, does it? I'm so clueless .

for the street just follow the directions, lightly color the filter do not saturate it. For racing just leave the oil off the filter.
