wow .. I still have to read the link but ...
I'm Canadian .. and I had this conversation the other day .. about you guys ..
weren't your constitution .. AND your civil liberties created by standing up for them ??
I see all over the world students .. workers .. and citizens standing up today !!! demanding change !! .. and using thier power as a groupt to display unrest .. and AMKE the Gov't answer to those it SERVES !!!

I see your society not as it was .. but as it is .. and complacency is the rule of the day ..

in this case .. it reflects to me only a tiny microcosm of the overall issues your facing .. you hear about things everyday .. and no-one seems to be stsanding up .. protests are gone .. and change is now out of your hands ..

As a local i have to weigh in on this one. I knew one of the 3 people that died on deal's gap, and the guy who a month earlier who died on the cherohala.
There aren't enough police officers in the state to write citations for every stupid action done at deal's gap on a weekend.
Is 20+ law enforcement officers on a 9 mile stretch of road overkill? Yes, especially when there are plenty of other traffic crimes in the local area.
Is there no reason for them to be there? Anyone who rides there more than once through in a year will know the answer to that.
Anyone else ever been passed stupidly? Anyone here seen their maker in the headlights of the car *OR* motorcycle that is oncoming *and* in your lane because they are incapable of properly driving their vehicle? Anyone here been "cock-blocked" by a car or motorcycle refusing to let other traffic go by them, and even resorting to riding in BOTH lanes to ensure that there was NO way that you could ever get by them?
Deal's gap is a road. It was rising in popularity for years before the CROTch was renovated. The renovations and the addition of Ron & Nancy's business there has improved the tourism for the area. Of course there is some "blame" for more riders, but with every group of riders you will get a percentage of squids along with the sane ones.
Sadly this leads to more screwups on the road.
Worse is the whole "them vs us" attitude that bikers have against cars, and cars have against bikers. Unfortunately for the bikers car-owners have the majority and the loudest voice due to brute strength. And they are not shy about calling the law when some butt-pirate flies by them in the middle of a blind corner flipping them the bird on the rev limiter...
3 deaths in one weekend created enough sensationalism to get a political response to a law enforcement problem that arguably needed some attention.
Darryl and Ben and all the rest can belittle lane-crossers and squids until they are blue in the face. They can hang the lane crossing kills signs from now until Jesus returns, and there will still be plenty of those who absolutely refuse to drive properly and intelligently and with common courtesy. The entire MOTORCYCLING community is who needs to correct this behavior through education and, if needed, downright rejection of those who act like idiots on public roads. The motorcycling community as a whole needs to stop responding to idiocy with a wink and a nod and actually start letting the real idiots know that they are not appreciated and that their behavior is going to eventually lead to draconian measures taken against motorcyclists. The state of Maryland is making noises about banning sportbikes....how stupid is that? Will it happen? I doubt it; but if motorcyclists in general continue their trend towards the gangsta/stunta culture...well.....
I hate the fact that I can't ride a favorite local road because of the idiots out there who ruin it for everyone. I hate fact that when I am riding the other people have this idea that I am some sort of speed-addled moron who thinks that deal's gap is my own personal racetrack. I hate the fact that my bike is now a prime target for law enforcement if i ride on deal's gap because of idiots.
But until things calm down, and until people STOP screwing around so much that the law enforcement is all over us, we are going to be targets if our speed exceeds the limit by 1mph. Or if hte lean angle is "excessive". Or whatever else is seen as an excuse to pull us over.
Cussing the police because they are doing what their bosses tell them to do is ignorance. Especially since their bosses are trying to make political brownie points by making an "Example" to appease the dumb masses who got pissed off by a few total idiots who treat the public highways like their own personal "I want to beat Rossi" training grounds.

BIGZXDADDY....I agree with ya. VA has gone over the top with there traffic laws. We are in Danville, VA quite a bit. If we are going to race, we always make sure that we have come back across the NC state lines before we pull the trigger. About 18 of us rode the bikes up to VIR in Danville, Va this past weekend for the big race. Seen quite a few law enforcement. Never had a problem in VA yet and I always have a radar detector on me when going through VA.
