'09 Connie SCREWED with only 1 mile on the clock...

So, I pick up the new beast on Friday and didn't make it more than 1 mile from the dealer, when I hear this loud rattling sound while accelerating through 1st and 2nd...strange I think, but I crank up the iPOD and go on my way, concerned.

Riding down the highway a few hours later, I notice the bike is bucking, surging and hesitating intermittently and I think "Fuck, this is gonna be a fun one to nail down", since it was so intermittent. I had just washed and waxed it and I figured maybe, just maybe...water somehow got into the electrical somewhere. I continue to ride her home and put her away after having put about 40 miles on while on my way home from the dealer.

Well, yesterday I hop on and figure I'd go out and put on 100-200 miles, when I stop at the gas station and hear that loud rattle all over again, only this time, it won't go away.

I finally figured out that it's the cam chain tensioner that must have broken. No doubt about that ominous sound coming from there being the can chain area. I rode her back home, parked her in the garage and took the ZX instead (was much colder riding on the ZX at only 38F). Tuesday, I'm calling the dealer to come get her and fix the problem. So much for having taken the wind right of out my sails.

She is however gorgeous in black and I'm sure the issue will be addressed quickly.

Secondary's were already gone before the bike was delivered...

hope they didn't drop something in there when they pulled the flies, its disappointing to have problems with a new bike, but i'm sure they will take care of it.

I hope they did not put Ted's old motor in your bike, but seriously, this sucks.... At this point there are probably metal and plstic bits in the oil as well, but wish you the best!

Cant wait to get my '08 out, and the area p full system on after I am done with the '03 500...

If that were the case, it would not be coming from the cam chain area. I know it's there - I remember that noise (only not as noisy) on startup on my ZX before I went to a non-hydraulic tensioner last year. No -- this is definitely the cam chain tensioner or the spring being broken. I just hope that whatever it is didn't or doesn't end up in the crankcase; that might no be so good. It comes and goes, but now it's noisy almost all the time. The fact that it's coming from there would explain why she's bucking and hesitating every so often. I hope the chain didn't jump a tooth -- ouch!

you're right that is a distinctive sound, prolly just a new tensioner away from back on the road.

This just plain sucks. Hopefully it is something minor and like you say hopefully it didn't jump a tooth. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to pull the tensioner and see if it is jammed or plugged.

Bike just got picked up now, but when I started it before, I heard light intermittent knocking coming from the bottom, so I'm betting that some piece of the tensioner is sitting at the bottom of the crank now. I told the dealer today that if the motor has to get opened, they can either get me a new motor or a new bike, as I won't take this motor under those circumstances. I'm betting that it also jumped a tooth as the bike was bucking, hesitating surging intermittently the day I got it. To me, this motor's fucked and it's going back to Kawasaki. I'm not a mechanic and I hope I'm wrong - I want to ride this bike now, not wait 3 weeks. I have the ZX to ride, but in the cold temps, the C is way better to keep the cold off me. I just had both my knees replaced within the last few months and the titanium doesn't much like sub zero temps.

They are opening it tomorrow @9 am - they got the message from me loud and clear. I've bought at least 10 bikes in the past 5 years from them, not to mention the ones I got friends of mine to buy from them over the same period. They did tell me that if it's got to be opened, they will fight to get me a new bike, which they have in stock now. They are a very service oriented and reputable dealer, but again, Kawasaki has to agree. I haven't titled the bike yet either, so this may yet happen.

In Nevada there is a buyers remorse law, you just may have one too. With only one mile on it and not titled, they could say it was a test drive and just give you another one. They could just say the sale fell through. One would think that an oil drain with a magnet would show any problems.

I had 8-9K miles on my 08 without an issue, but this was obviously a defect from factory. Funny thing is, these engines have already seen the Dyno at the factory long before they were shipped...so if it was going to break under load, you'd guess it would have happened on their Dyno, not less than 1 mile from the dealer.

My 08 was flawless for 33,000 miles right up to the point where the engine died.
But in FBAs case if it isn't something very minor like a stuck adjuster, I think he should get a new bike. When I get most any repair done it is usually a nightmare with several return trips. I dislike it so much that when my bike fully under warranty died, I opted for a new one mostly to avoid the hassle.

They are after Kawasaki now to give me a new bike, no response so far though and I'm not hopeful from the sound of things. They already told me that the cases have to be split as there's a noise at the bottom, but are waiting, as they are still hounding Kawasaki for a new bike.

The service manager at Kawi was apparently out of town for the past few days, so there's been no response to the request just yet. My attorneys have already been notified and are on standby. The dealer is a very good friend of mine and will work with me to get the bike changed. We expect to hear from Kawi by Monday. I do have to give them a reasonable delay before I pull the pin. I don't expect this to be an easy fight, but I do expect e new ride if I get the attorney's involved. Not sure if me calling Kawasaki would make much difference though.

you bought a new bike, not a bike that needed to be dismantled.. .this is a legal no-brainer.

Their legal obligation (according to them) is to repair it under warranty, not replace it. What we'll get them to do is another story.

Good Luck, but my experiance with Kawi's warrantee department is far less than stellar.Unless your dealer takes the hit I suspect you will have a rebuilt engine in your bike, as i don't see Kawi doing anything ore than a warrantee rebuild.

what kawi wants to do and what your contract with them are two different things.. you entered into an agreement to purchase ã brand new, not rebuilt machine & they've broken that agreement.. again, it's ã legal No brainer. your damages are the difference in value of ã new vs rebuillt connie, and you can sue them for both breech and recission .. pardon spelling hard to type on this pda..
